ANDERSON, California -- A night of constantly changing weather conditions made for an interesting night Saturday at Shasta Raceway Park, as the Westcare Late Model Series made its first appearance at the 3/8's mile oval. The person who handled it best was Shannon Mansch, who took the lead late in the race and stormed away to the victory in the Prime Financial 100.
Steven Gannon took the win in the NASCAR Coors Light Late Models, Jack Epperson came out on top in the NASCAR Auto City Modifieds, David Braund took the checkers in the Schmitt Equipment Sales Bombers, and Micah Parmer scored the victory in the Legend division.
The Prime Financial 100 for the Westcar Late Model Series started quite rocky, with two cautions in the first seven laps. The car with the worst damage was that of Chris Monez, who’s right front bumper would cause a later caution for debris. After that, though, things settled down quite a bit, and Redding’s Kyle Cattanach would establish himself as a strong contender at the front of the field. That, however, wouldn’t last long, as the handle went away on Cattanach’s car, and Shannon Mansch surged to the front of the field. Cattanach would eventually fall to fourth in the field, as Byron Gonzales and Gary Glenn made a race of it in the end. They didn’t have enough to catch Mansch though, as she would cruise to her second victory in a row. Gonzales was second, followed by Glenn, Cattanach, and Bobby Butler, Jr.
It was one of the best races of the year for the NASCAR Coors Light Late Models. Early on, it looked as if Randy Hirschbock would be able to storm away to victory, as he lead most of the forty lap feature, but what was behind him would eventually hunt him down. It was an outstanding effort for one Steven Gannon. Working his way from the middle of the field, he meticulously passed car after car, and formed one side-by-side battle after another. Toward the end of the race, he was on a rail, as he passed Hirschbock for the lead. He would run away for the victory, followed by Alan Pyszora, Hirschbock, Eric Gannon, and Bobby Hirschbock.
In the NASCAR Auto City Modifieds, it was a dominating effort for Jack Epperson. The rest of the field stayed close, but nobody was able to pass him. Epperson would take the win, followed by Stan Gunderson, Guy Young, and Gary Glenn.
The Schmitt Equipment Sales Bomber division produced one of their best races of the year as well on Saturday, which featured three of the series’ top drivers battling side-by-side and nose-to- tail. David Braund, Cody Braund, and Dave Lewallen all battled from the middle of the back, with David and Cody making contact multiple times at the front. In the end, though, it would be David Braund coming away with the win, followed by Cody Braund, Dave Lewallen, Joe Brattoli, and Rick Gibbs.
It was another fine showing in the Legend division by 2005 champion Micah Parmer. He had to wrestle his way to the front, passing Howard Hammers and George Sheldon, Jr., but once he got there he was unbeatable. Zachery Kavert would give him a run for his money, but it wasn’t enough. Parmer would take the win, followed by Kavert, Hammers, Sheldon Jr., and Mackena Bell.
