Skagit Speedway tried, tried very hard, but couldn’t defeat Mother Nature, who claimed the Friday’s second preliminary event of the 35th Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup.

The program was already delayed by rain for hours, with qualifying beginning at 9:45 p.m. Qualifying and heat races were completed as well as the last chance D-Main race. The rain came again during the C-Main around 12:45 a.m., making the track unsuitable for racing.

Winning four heat races were touring racer Jason Meyers, Alberta’s Jeff Hodgson, many-time “King of California” Brent Kaeding, and Iowa’s Dennis Moore Jr. John Tharp won the shortened, ten-lap D-Main race.

Out of 63 cars on hand for Friday’s preliminary action, Jonathan Allard set fast time in qualifying with a lap of 11.625 seconds around the 3/10-mile, high-baked, clay oval.

Points from Thursday’s and Friday’s events will be combined to determine line-ups in Saturday’s main events. Sixty-six different cars have competed in this year’s 35th edition of Skagit Speedway’s crown jewel event.
