LONG NIGHT OF RACING AT SOUTH SOUND SPEEDWAY

With the three fastest classes on the schedule for Saturday night, June 24th, the stands filled up fast with fans from all over. The Super Stocks, Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks, NW Sprintcar Racing Association (NSRA) and the WA Midget Racing Association (WMRA) delighted the crowd with speed, action and competition.

Dan Rhodes started on the pole of the Super Stock main event and took the lead on the very first lap. Eric Tibbitts was running second and Joe Constance was third when the first caution was thrown on lap three for a pile-up in turn four. No one car was determined the cause so all drivers got their spots back. Lap 13 brought out the second caution when Jim Warn spun. Back on green Rhodes still had the lead with Tibbitts and Constance in close range. Kelly Mann, who set fast time for the night, was running well below his usual speed and was lapped on 24. Brad Stanwood also had some problems and left the track on lap 23, returning on lap 29. Joe Constance had moved up to second behind Dan Rhodes with Mike Obrist in third. Lap 54 brought out the third caution when Rhodes came up on Jim Warn to put him down a lap. He was going by Warn when Warn got into Rhodes and took them both out. On the restart another caution was thrown when Dan Woodward and Jerry Clark got together. Joe Constance now had the lead with Mike Obrist in second and Eric Tibbitts in third. Tom Sweatman moved into third on lap 61. Joe Constance won the race with Mike Obrist in second and Tom Sweatman in third. Eric Tibbitts held on for fourth followed by Bob Presley. Ray Wallace finished a very strong sixth followed by Dan Obrist, Ron Wolf, Jim Warn and Tim Gosch.

Jared Vorse set fast time for the Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks. Mitchell Woods led all eight laps of the B heat race for the win over Rick Casebolt and Jacob Haider. Dan Walker led all eight laps of the A heat to win. Brian Wilson was second and Rick Courtright was third. Jacob Haider started on the pole position and led the first four laps before Jared Vorse took over. Steve Woods moved into second with Dan Walker in third. The first caution came on lap 12 when Tom Hecker spun. The next caution came on the very next lap when Brian Withers got a little out of control, hitting Rick Casebolt and Tom Hecker. Hecker spun and had to leave the track but came back on before the green flew. The rest of the race ran without incident. Jared Vorse won his second main event of the season. Steve Woods finished second with Dan Walker in third. Mitchell Woods was fourth and Scott Johnson was fifth.

Andy Alberding set fast time in the NSRA. Tony Thomas won the first heat race followed by Jeff Montgomery and Justin Mack. Brian Smith won the second heat race with Matt Hein in second and Mike Basher in third. Craig Deaver powered ahead to win the third heat race with Dale Petry in second and Jeff Bird in third. Craig Deaver won the main event with Jeff Montgomery, Brian Smith, Andy Alberding and Jeff Bird were the rest of the top five.

Brad Curtis set a new track record in the WMRA with a 13.221. Kenny Wood won the first of three heat races over Snake Livernash and Kenny Burns. Spence Gatrell, Tony Seidelman and Jeff Bird were the top three in the second heat race. Brea Lopez won the third heat with Skeeter Flake and Evan Margeson in tow. Ken Ferris won the main event with Matt Stone in second and Dallas Melby in third. Skeeter Flake, Spence Gatrell, Tony Seidelman, Doug Kammerzell, Pat Bliss, Evan Margeson, and Jeff Bird rounded out the top ten.
