TENINO, Washington -- There was another huge crowd at South Sound Speedway on Saturday night, July 8th to see the Super Stocks, Top Notch Trailers Street Stocks, FSCRA / Super-4’s and the WA Midget Racing Association (WMRA). The crowd was also delighted with a small taste of what is to come to the track next weekend when Mike Gibbons brought out his NABR Big Rig Truck. Gibbons ran it around a few times and did a few burnouts. It was a great preview for those who didn’t know what to expect and a reminder for those who did.
Tom Sweatman was the fast qualifier for the Super Stocks. Mike Obrist won the dash over Kelly Mann, Dan Rhodes and Sweatman. Bob Presley and Mitch Franklin pulled the front row starting positions in the main event. Presley jumped out to the lead on lap one with Franklin in second and Mike Obrist in third. Lap 29 brought out the first caution when Fred Walker spun and got into Kelly Mann. Mann was running sixth and had to head into the pits with a flat tire. Luckily he missed no laps and was back out before the green flew. Mitch Franklin took over the lead on lap 40 and Presley was stuck on the outer groove. Presley moved back to fifth and then got himself into the dirt and then his car stopped in turn four, bringing out the second caution.
Franklin led when racing commenced with Mike Obrist in second, Dan Rhodes in third, Tom Sweatman in fourth and Brad Stanwood in fifth. On lap 63, Obrist went off the track with a rear end problem. Lap 68 brought out the third caution. Presley was being lapped by the leaders when he and Tom Sweatman got together in turn one, taking them both out of the race for the night. In turn four, when the caution was thrown, Tommy Elstoen and Rod Shultz got together knocking both of them out also. On the restart Mitch Franklin dropped from first to 11th in three laps. It was later learned that Franklin had a tire going down and was having difficulty steering the car. Dan Rhodes now had the lead with Brad Stanwood in second, Eric Tibbitts in third, Dan Obrist in fourth and Kelly Mann in fifth. Dan Rhodes raced to the finish for his second win of the season. Brad Stanwood finished in second with Kelly Mann in third, Dan Obrist in fourth and Eric Tibbitts in fifth. Jim Warn, Rod Schultz Jr., AJ Fugitt, Mitch Franklin, and Jerry Clark were the rest of the top ten and all on the lead lap.
JJ Hamilton was the fast qualifier for the Top Notch Trailers Street Stocks but it was Kyle Markstrom who won the trophy dash, his first of the season.
Cody Erskine led the first five laps of the heat race before Hamilton took over the spot to win. Erskine stayed strong to finish second with Tony Bartlotti in third. Cody Erskine had the pole position for the main event and led the first two laps before outside pole-sitter Sean Riley took over.
Jay Hopkins was running second with Erskine in third by lap seven. JJ Hamilton moved up into third on lap 12. The first caution came out on lap
15 when Tony Bartlotti spun. On the restart JJ Hamilton was given a stop and go penalty for jumping the start. Then on lap 18 another caution was thrown when Jay Hopkins blew another motor in his car. This was the second in as many races. The race restarted and Sean Riley was still out front with Bobby Micielli in second. On lap 23 Micielli got by Riley on the backstretch and raced on to win his first main event of the season. Sean Riley finished up second with Rick Courtright in third, Mike Aubrey in fourth and Kyle Markstrom in fifth.
Wayne Dillon was 11/100ths away from beating his own track record Saturday night for the FSCRA/Super-4 class when he set fast time. Kevin Koepke led all four laps of the dash to win with Dillon in second, John Grosvenor in third and Matt Melby in fourth. Chuck VanMuiswinkel and David Callendar led two and three laps a piece in the B heat race before winner Cody Stewart took over. Callendar was second and Bob Quarterman finished third. Eric Kaas led the first five laps of the A heat race before Wayne Dillon took over to win with Kaas in second and Dave Powell in third. Davis Callendar took the early lead in the main event from his pole position. Lap five brought out the first caution when Wayne Dillon, Dave Powell and Kevin Koepke all got together. Dillon had major body damage and had to go into the pits but was back out before the green flew. Kevin Koepke however was done for the night. The second and final caution came on lap ten for debris. Dillon was off and on again during this caution with more parts removal but never lost a lap. Matt Melby now had the lead with David Callendar in second and Jerry Koepping in third. On lap 17 Melby suddenly left the track with a suspension problem. Callendar took over the lead, Koepping stayed in second and Eric Kaas moved into third. On lap 28 Cody Stewart had to exit the track after running in third spot because of a fluid leak. David Callendar held on for the win with Koepping in second and David Hale in third. Dave Powell ended up fourth and Eric Kaas was fifth. Wayne Dillon, Chuck VanMuiswinkel, Cullen Jensen, John Grosvenor and Cody Stewart rounded out the top ten.

Ken Muth was the winner of the first heat race over Stuart Birkinbine and Kenny Burns. The second heat race was won by Doug Kammerzell followed by Skeet Flake and Kenny Wood. The third and final heat race was won by Spence Gatrell with Brad Curtis in second and Pat Bliss in third. Matt Stone won the quick, nearly caution-free main event. It was his first at South Sound Speedway this season. Spence Gatrell was second with Brad Curtis in third, Scott Walker in fourth and Brea Lopez in fifth. Kenny Ferris, Pat Bliss, Doug Kammerzell, Rob Lindsey and Snake Livernash rounded out the top ten.
