ANDERSON, California -- On yet another hot, dry day at Shasta Raceway Park, track conditions were slick and water was a popular commodity. That proved to be no problem at all, however, for WSSRL Supermodified driver Troy Regier. After setting a new track record in qualifying, he went on to dominate the main event, winning by nearly eight and a half seconds. Ken Gifford took the victory in the I-4 Pro Modifieds, with Brian Smith leading the Bombers, Matt Lundstrom taking first in the Legends, and Jake Vanpool topping the Hornet class.
A full field of Supermodifieds showed up to play on Saturday, hoping to put on a good show for their only appearance this season. And that they did. The race started relatively cleanly, with Jeff Russell taking an early lead. That all changed on lap seven, as Russell attempted to lap Jim Pasquin. Those two drivers made contact, sending them both into the outside wall, and collecting Jim Birges and Mike Baisch in the process. Baisch would be the only one to continue after the incident. After a lengthy delay, things got back underway, and ran much more smoothly for the remainder of the race. Regier took the lead within a few laps of the green and never looked back, leading A.J. Russell, Mike Baisch, Rick Veenstra, and Amy Barnes to the line with an eight and a half second lead.
Things started in a fairly similar fashion for the I-4 Pro Modifieds, as an early crash slowed the field in this division as well. This incident ended the night for Greg VanCleave and Willie Leuzinger. After that, though, things ran fairly smoothly, with Ken Gifford methodically moving his way toward the front. After a tight three way battle with Jake Tillman and Codi Barba for multiple laps, he finally got to the front, and sailed to victory, winning by just over a second. Jake Tillman was second, followed by Codi Barba, Kevin Barba, and Zach Gifford.
In a time when most are used to the domination of someone named "Braund" in the Schmitt Equipment Sales Bombers, there was a decidedly different tone this weekend. In fact, it was a resoundingly different tone. After a few quick passes, the entire race was dominated by Brian Smith, who pulled out to a large lead early, only to be drawn back to the pack by a caution. That still didn’t stop him though, as he won the race by nearly four seconds. Randy File was second, followed by Cody Braund, Brian King, and Tim McLeod.
Despite an intense heat wave here in Northern California, SRP did see a Seattle storm blow through the Legend division. His name was Matt Lundstrom. Though he did not pull away as far as some drivers did in other divisions, he stayed out front for most of the event, leading the pack to the line by about two seconds. Micah Parmer was second, followed by Zachery Kavert, George Sheldon, Jr., and Mackena Bell.
As usual, the Hornets put on an exciting show to end the night, capped off by a late race pass by Jake Vanpool to take the victory over Peter Smith on the makeshift SRP road course. Lane Amlin was third, followed by Jim Campbell and Kevin Walker.
