CORONA, California -- Randel King is not your typical teenage driver. The Riverside resident does not even have a driver’s license yet, he has not had any formal driver training yet either. He does however have a license to drive in the ASA Speed Truck Challenge Series and when the series visited Irwindale Speedway last Saturday night, he proved he was worthy of owning that license. Randel was second quickest in time trails and finished fifth in the 75-lap main event. King started the main event in the fifth position and stayed close to the lead pack all night, “late in the race we started to get a little loose but we hung in there to get a top five finish tonight” said King.
This was the fourth consecutive ASA Speed Truck event that King and his #35 Hype Manufacturing/Clay Andrews Racing Dodge has finished in the top five and the third consecutive time he has qualified in the top two. Darren Young was the winner of Saturday’s main event with Scott Dodd second and pole sitter Lee Hatch third. Jim Putman finished fourth with King rounding out the top five.
What makes Randel King different from other teenagers is that he is the developmental driver for Clay Andrews Racing who also fields the #84 Ranchwood Homes Chevrolet driven by David Gilliland in the NASCAR Busch Series. Gilliland shocked the NASCAR world when he won the Busch race at Kentucky Speedway in only his seventh series start.
