MONROE, Washington -- The pecking order in the chase for the championships changed after the Seattle RV night at the races at Evergreen Speedway on Saturday August 12. Seven divisions were in action and the finishes of the mains changed the complexion of the point standings. The Speedway Chevrolet NASCAR Super Stock main event winner Shane Harding won for the seventh time in 2006. Craig Rowalt won his first Les Schwab Tires NASCAR Bomber main this season. Rick McNeil won the overall main for the Northwest Legend Series. Figure Eight winners are Delfel in the Super Division and Troy Simianer in the Extreme Contact Division. Two mains were held for the Hornet Division with Bobby Shukar in race #1 and David Dixon in race #2 declared the winners.
The last two weeks of racing in the Super Stock Division has changed the championship chase order. Doug Davidson led in the points until the second race of last week’s double header when Rob Touchette took the lead. Touchette started Saturday’s 50-lap main with a 2-point lead over John Burtsche, 8-points up on Davidson and 12-points on Shane Harding. After Harding’s seventh win of the year he moved to third only 8-points behind Touchette. Touchette finished third behind Naima Lang. Burtsche’s fourth place run dropped him back to 4-points behind Touchette. Davidson recovered from an early race spin to finish sixth now in fourth 12-points out. With three races remaining in the 2006 season Touchette and Burtsche will need to keep an eye on the rearview mirror for Harding who was over 40-points back five weeks ago.
The picture for the season championship in the Bomber Division changed after the finish of the 30-lap main. Point leader Duane Schosboek started the night with a 22-point margin over Darin Stordahl. Stordahl suffered mechanical problems after a second lap accident and finished eighteenth. Stordahl dropped back to fourth in the standings 33-points in arrears. Starting the night 27-points back in fourth Steve Ptacek moved to second still 27 back after a seventh place finish. In third for the chase James Mugge is 28-points out of the championship picture. Schosboek has three races left this season to win an eleventh championship at Evergreen but a first in the Bomber Division.
A very popular win in the Bomber Division was garnered by Craig Rowalt. Racing in memory of his brother Steve McElroy a Bomber driver who tragically lost his life this past off season Craig won his first race of the year. With Steve’s number on the side of his car Rowalt had the crowd on their feet cheering him on to the emotional win. On victory stage he said “I want to thank all the drivers and crews for their support during a tough time coping with the untimely death of my brother Steve.”
It is now two overall wins in row for Northwest Legend Series Masters Division driver Rick McNeil. The winner of the Pro Division is Jimmy Landon and in the Semi-Pro Division it was Nick Carey back on the podium.
The Extreme Contact Figure Eight main was a crash fest with tempers flying the black flag flew as often as tires blew from the contact. Point leader Troy Simianer somehow survived and won the event. Bill Wade and Lance Ograin finished second and third respectively.
Coming from a tenth place starting spot Doug Delfel patiently worked his way to the front taking the lead on lap 23 of the 30-lap main for the Super Figure Eight Division. Greg Scott and Jerry Funden covered the next two spots.
