REDDING, California One week after teammate Mason Moore captured his first Main Event win at Cycleland Speedway, Alissa Geving stepped to the top of the winner’s podium with her first win of the season nipping Brian Southers at the finish line in an exciting two-kart dual in the Outlaw Kart Open Intermediate Division.
Geving qualified 11th but went on to win her heat race, the seventh heat race win of the season for the 14-year-old from Penngrove, Calif. Her heat race win was a bit of foreshadowing as she topped Nick Larson with a strong surge coming out of Turn Four and got him at the line. In the Main Event, she started on the front row, and after an early battle with Colby Copeland for first, Geving grabbed the lead on Lap Six and turned it on with only a caution to slow her down.
Coming out of the caution, Geving was again on the move, until a late caution forced a green-white-checkered finish. With the field bunched, Geving went low in Turn One, while Southers went high. Through Turns Three and Four, the roles were reversed as Southers took the low line and Geving was up high and slightly behind the #80 kart of Southers. As they raced off four, Geving edged out to the lead as the checkered flag was displayed, bringing the No. 3x A1A Muffler/QRC Karts/Crystal Geyser Outlaw Kart to victory. Her winner’s check, like all of her winnings, will go to her “Race For Life” campaign in support of the American Cancer Society and family friend Roy Moss.
Moore’s night was filled with ups and downs. After qualifying third, the 12th time he has qualified third or higher in 14 races, the current points leader suffered a mechanical problem in the Trophy Dash, where he owns five wins already this season. After getting the kart back in order, Moore scored another Top Five finish in the Main Event to maintain his points lead. The 15-year-old from Princeton, Calif., has finished out of the Top Five in the Open Intermediate Division only twice all year, Round 2 and Round 12, in the No. 22 Blue Shield of California/Moore Insurance Services/Crystal Geyser Outlaw Kart.
For the second straight week, Geving also competed in the Open Division, qualifying 10th. She finished second in her heat and started on the second row in the Main. Geving ran sixth for a portion of the race but was jumped on a restart coming out of a caution that dropped her a couple of spots. She settled for 10th place in only her second week in the Open Division.
With two wins in two weeks for the Melo Gordon Motorsports teammates, the duo returns to action this week looking to build on the recent success with four Rounds remaining.
