
Scotty Backman powered the Extreme Signs and Graphics Pontiac to the win in the Wright Group Event Services Late Model main event. Also taking wins during the Denver Zoo Race Against Extinction night were: Terry Plummer in the RMLRA Legends, Mike Cox in the Sheds R Us Super Stocks, Joel Hansen in the SUNOCO Grand American Modifieds, Stan Griffin in the Dunlap's Trailers Sportsman division and Don Callender in the Sheds R Us Busses.
Rick Rusk and Scott Miller were on the front row for the Legend car main event. Randy Zimmerman slammed into the turn 3 wall on the first lap for an original restart. On the next attempt, Craig Coughlin and Brittney Johnson tangled for another restart. Terry Plummer led the first lap with Chris Eggleston moving into second over Jace Hansen, John Baker and Scott Miller. Kyle Clegg moved into fifth by lap 7. By lap 13, Tyler Chrisinger moved into fifth and John Chiesa lost a muffler adding a unique sound to his car. Chrisinger took fourth from Baker by lap 20 and Plummer and Eggleston had a great battle up front. R Zimmerman spun in turn 4 on lap 24 for a caution. A green-white-checkered finish took place with the lapped cars in the back. Plummer won over Eggleston, Hansen, Chrisinger and Clegg. Luke Sweckard spun across the finish line.
Mark Neff and Mario Garramone led the Super Stock field to the green for their main event. Neff led the first lap over AJ Grasso. Darrell Smith pulled off on lap 2 and Mike Cox was up to third. Cox took the lead on lap 5 with Neff back to second ahead of Grasso, Dennis Edwards and Mario Garramone. Joel Sidell and Ken Creekmore pitted on lap 8 and Neff was black-flagged for smoking on lap 10. Edwards was now second over Grasso, Dave Miles and Garramone. Chris Vieth was fifth on lap 13 and Kurt Riddell spun with no caution on lap 14. Dave Neff pitted and Jeff Manchester made contact with Chris Naeb on lap 16. Vieth was fourth by lap 20 with Cox working his way though lapped-traffic. George Gallegos took over fifth on lap 21, but nothing was slowing Cox down as he won over Edward, Vieth, Miles and Gallegos.
Barney Visser and Jim Stivaletta led the Grand American Modified field to the green flag. Visser took off and led over Stivaletta and Jeff Hansen. Ed Vecchiarelli Jr was third on lap 2 and second on lap 3 as Joel Hansen raced through the field. Hansen took the lead from Visser on lap 20 with Forest Smith third over Ed Vecchiarelli Jr and Jerry Robertson. Hansen won over Visser, Smith, Vecchiarelli Jr and Robertson.
Jeff Webb and Tommy Roe were on the front row for the Sportsman main event. Webb led the first lap and Stan Griffin took the lead on lap 2 over Webb and Tommy Roe. Caution flew for a tangle in turn 4 on the fourth lap to bunch up the field as Rick Hunt was real slow and John Baker went through the infield. Another caution flew before another lap got scored with Alan Phelps tangled with another car and Phelps lost body parts. Gerry Borquez was also involved. Dave Brown broke in turn 3 after laying down fluid. Phelps was sent off the track under the caution. Back underway after a lengthy cleanup, Griffin continued his stay up front with Webb second followed by Roe, Alan Carter, and Rick Hunt. On lap 19, Dennis Pobanz stalled at the track exit for a caution. Roe slowed down on lap 24 and fell way back as Webb continued his awesome run in second over Carter, Hunt and JimBob Rogers. Rogers got by Hunt on lap 28, and Griffin won over Webb, Carter, Rogers and Hunt.
Dan Savage was on the pole for the Late Model main event with Bruce Yackey to the outside. Savage led the first lap over Yackey, Yackey fought back and the front 10 cars were two-by-two with great racing action and positions changing every lap. Aaron Cox was sent off the track for smoking on lap 8 to end his division debut. Mark Dixon pulled off on lap 15 as the field started spreading apart. Caution flew on lap 18, for Mike Hannah spinning out with Hannah getting his spot back on the restart and Joe James Jr going to the rear. Savage and Yackey continued their battle for the lead with Scotty Backman fighting with Rick Smith for third and Darren Robertson in fifth on lap 20. With 5 laps to go, Backman was now second looking to the inside of Savage for the lead. Smith was third over Roger Avants and Chris Archer. Backman took the lead for good on lap 37 and caution flew on lap 38 for Nick Rozack spinning. A green-white-checkered restart saw Backman leading Dan Savage. Backman took the win over Smith, Savage, Avants and Archer.
In the early afternoon qualifying sessions, Terry Plummer was quickest for the Legend cars with a 19.981. Tyler Chrisinger was second over Chris Eggleston. Kurt Riddell was quickest in the Super Stocks, but was disqualified in post race inspection. Chris Vieth was the new quick time holder with a 20.605. Dennis Edwards was second over Jeff Manchester. Ed Vecchiarelli was quickest in the Modifieds with a 16.780. Joel Hansen was second over Ed Vecchiarelli Jr. Andy Lewis was quickest in the Sportsman division with a 17.877. Davin Fisbeck was second over JimBob Rogers. In the Late Model qualifying Scotty Backman was quick time with a 16.140. Joe James Jr was second over Ronnie Hults.
Kyle McCartney and Mike Weber were on the front row for the first Legend car B-main. Weber led the first lap over Greg O’Donnell and Jace Hansen. Plummer took over on lap 3 with Chris Eggleston moving into second over Kyle Clegg, Jace Hansen and O’Donnell. Plummer won over Eggleston, Hansen, Clegg and O’Donnell.
AJ Grasso and Dave Miles were on the front row for the first Super Stock B-main. Emett Grazier led the first lap with Grasso in second. Mike Cox battles for second and took over on lap 6 knocking Edwards to third over Kurt Riddell and Miles. Riddell took third from Edwards on lap 8 and Grazier won over Cox, Riddell, Edwards and Miles.
Justin Case and Adam Shrove were on the front row for the Grand American Modified trophy dash. Shrove led the first lap with Forest Smith in second and Justin Case right behind in third. Smith took over the lead on lap 5 with his Vecchiarelli-borrowed motor. Smith won over Ed Vecchiarelli Jr, Joel Hansen, Adam Shrove and Jerry Robertson.
Bert Chapman and Brent Miller were on the front row for the second Legend car B-main. Miller led the first lap over John Baker and Chapman. Baker took over on lap 2 and Chapman was second on lap 5. John Chiesa was second on lap 7 and Tyler Chrisinger was third on lap 8. Baker won over Chiesa, Chrisinger, Stewart, and Chapman.
In the second Super Stock B-main, Mario Garramone and Bruce Borchardt were on the front row. Garramone lead early over DJ Neff with Neff taking over on lap 4. Dave Neff was third over Jeff Manchester and Bruce Borchardt. Darrell Smith was fifth on lap 8. On the last lap, fluid was in turn 2 and cars went spinning. DJ Neff took the win over Garramone, Manchester, Chris Naeb and Jeff Philpott. Flagman, Larry Harper went spinning on the last lap in the Colorado National Speedway car.
Jeff Purvis and Nathan Gasser were on the front row for the Grand American Modified B-Main. Mike Castagno broke before as he got the green flag with Gasser and Purvis battling for the lead. In turn 3, Gasser went spinning and Purvis took a hit to the turn 3 wall. Gasser continued in the lead over Jon Lincicome, JD Gresham, Jim Stivaletta and Barney Visser. On lap 5 Gresham and Lincicome tangled with Gresham spinning for a caution. Gresham continued at the rear of the field. Gresham jumped the start and rocketed up to third, but was penalized four positions. Gasser continued to lead over Lincicome and Barney Visser. Gasser took the win over Lincicome, Visser, Stivaletta, and Jeff Hansen.
Jeff Webb and Eric Blackard were on the front row for the first Sportsman B-main. Webb led the first lap with John Baker in second. Baker took the lead on lap 3 over Webb, Blackard, Alan Carter and Stan Griffin. Griffin took fourth on lap 5 and was third on lap 6 as he worked his way though the field. Baker took the win with Webb second over Griffin, Blackard and Carter.
Alan Phelps and Dennis Pobanz were on the front row for the second Sportsman B-main. Stephanie Brown pulled off before the green flag with problems on her new ride. Phelps led the first 2 laps before Tommy Roe took over on lap 3 with Lee Kemmit into second and Phelps to third. Rick Hunt took over third on lap 4 and Davin Fisbeck moved into fourth ahead of Phelps. Kemmit took the lead on lap 8 and Holmes took fifth from Phelps. Kemmit won over Hunt, Roe, Fisbeck and Holmes.
Mark Dixon and Chris Atkinson were on the front row for the Late Model main event. Atkinson led the first lap with Scott Wilson tagging the turn 2 wall and making it off the track before a caution. Caution flew for debris from Wilson’s car on lap 4 and Atkinson led over Dan Savage, Mike Hannah, Rick Smith and Scotty Backman. Smith was second on lap 7 and Backman was fourth on lap 9 as Atkinson won over Smith, Savage, Backman, and Hannah.
After PJ Mottorano scratched from the second Late Model B-main, Darren Bucklen moved to the pole with Nick Rozack to his outside. Bucklen led the first lap with Darren Robertson up to second over Nick Rozack. Caution flew on lap 4 when Roger Avants spun in turn 2. Bruce Yackey was sent to the rear and Bucklen led over Robertson, Rozack, Avants and Archer. Bucklen broke leading and Robertson took over the lead and Mike Hahnken pitted the 05 machine on lap 8. Joe James Jr shot to second over Avants, Archer and Rozack. Robertson took the race over James, Avants, Archer and Rozack.
Don Callender barely held off Jerry Sutherland to win the bus race with Jeff Larsen third over Troy Witthar and Tom Miracola. After the checkered flag, Troy tipped his bus over and caught on fire. Witthar escaped unhurt.
