EL CAJON, CA. The late model sportsman drivers at Cajon Speedway are looking forward to a breather on August 12. But first they must direct their focus to the racing event, which will be held this upcoming weekend at the 3/8 mile paved oval.
August 12 will be the final night off this year for the competitors in the Cajon's premier stock car racing division. Following that race the division competes for six consecutive Saturday nights before their point season comes to what may well be a dramatic and nail biting conclusion on September 23. This Saturday night the street stocks, bomber stocks, and National Auto Sport Association (NASA) Mazda cars will join them in action on the 3/8-mile track located next to Gillespie Field.
Race time is 6:45 PM. Qualifying runs will kick off the evening and start at 5:15 PM.
The championship points battle at the track this year in the sportsman is the tightest it has been in nearly a quarter century. Four drivers, Ron Overman, John Tyczki, Gary Tamborelli, and Jerry Gay, are locked up in a tight struggle, which finds them separated by only 32 points. And since a maximum 95 points can be earned each race night, needless to say no one is in the driver's seat to claim the 2000 championship at the track.

And since a maximum 95 points can be earned each race night, needless to say no one is in the driver's seat to claim the 2000 championship at the track. All of the rivals with the exception of Tyczki have been involved in title chases before in the number one class at Cajon. Overman edged out Gary Crossland by just four points to take the super stock championship way back in 1974. In addition he edged out his stepson Todd McLauchlan on the final night of the season to claim the Grand American modified trophy in 1996. Gay won the late model title that year after pocketing five street stock championships in the mid-1980's. Tamborelli is certainly no stranger to championship chases either. He is gunning for an unprecedented fourth consecutive title this year.
And while Tyczki has never been involved in a sportsman battle before, he has survived the whims and pressure of title runs in the bomber stocks at Cajon. He started his career at Cajon in that division and earned titles in both 1994 and 1995.
The current standings find Overman just 13 markers ahead of Tyczki, 30 points in front of Tamborelli, and 32 digits ahead of Gay. Overman has 939 points while his three pursuers have 926, 909, and 907. And should those four run into a string of bad luck, fifth place Todd McLauchlan cannot be counted out of the chase yet. He is unchallenged for that position and has 736 points.
