WARF WINS AUSTIN CHRISTOPHERSON MEMORIAL 100

MERIDIAN, Idaho -- Monday Night’s Tom Scott Honda Labor Day Bash Late Model 100 was renamed in honor of Austin Christopherson. Austin was the speedway’s guest of Honor, August 5th, with the “Racing for Smiles” Program. He passed away August 29th from Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy. Julie and Tim Christopherson, Austin’s parents and his sister Kayla and brother Jake were on hand for the race and were the Grand Marshalls.

The Jerry Lewis Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy has been a Labor Day tradition for the last 41 years. So during the evening Winged Sprint drivers Matt Elliot and Brandon Johnson went through the stands in a fill the helmet campaign. They collected $780.00 that will be forwarded to the local MDA in Austin’s memory. Austin’s could not express enough thanks for the Speedway for honoring their son and the generosity of the fans for their donations

Bryan Warf set the pace for the evening qualifying quickest with a 13.665 second lap. Warf has qualified quickest 5 out of 6 race nights this season. John Nesmith and Nick Gibson qualified second and third quick, respectively. Current Late Model point’s leader Craig Bell qualified 4th quick.

Dan Lowther led the field to the green flag and took the lead going into turn 1. Scott Durbin starting outside front row had the lead as they crossed the line to complete lap 1 of 100. Durbin held the lead through the first 13 laps when he and Tyler Monroe made contact as the battled for the lead in turn 3 both spun and brought out the yellow flag. Both drivers went to the pits and returned to the track before the green flag flew for the restart. When Monroe exited the pits officials noticed he was leaking brake fluid and he had to retire for the night and finished a disappointing 13th place. Dan Buckley inherited the lead with Jim Tremewan right on his bumper.

On the 22nd trip round the quarter mile oval Warf had gained 9 spots and was in third. Tremewan took the lead from Buckley on lap 27 while Warf moved into 2nd on lap 29. Bell moved into 3rd on the 32nd lap. Warf and Bell both past Tremewan on the 33rd lap for 1st and 2nd respectively. Over the next 67 laps the two were never separated by more than .5 seconds. They were 8 seconds ahead of the field at one point but cautions pulled the field closer. The last 23 laps were under green and Warf crossed the line .322 seconds in front of Bell and over 5 seconds in front of John Nesmith in 3rd. This was Warf 2nd main event win in the division this season. He trailed Bell by 63 points going into the night. With 1 race remaining Warf is 45 points behind Bell. The last race of the season for the Late Models, September 23rd, is slated for 150 laps.

The Idaho Six-cylinder Racing League (ISRL) wrapped up their season at Meridian Speedway Monday night. Dean Waltman set the pace in qualifying with a 13.985. An early spin in the 30 lap main event ended Waltmans night finishing last in the main event. Young Sierra Jackson qualifying 3rd quick broke something in the front end of her car and hit the wall in turn 1 on the first lap of the trophy dash. Her crew worked hard to repair the car and she made it out for the heat race only to have it break on the same place on the track on the 2nd lap of the heat race. This ended her season in the ISRL car and diminished any hope of moving holding on to her 3rd place spot in the point’s standings. With Jackson out of the main there was an opening near the top of the standings for others to move. Pat Quinn started the night 35 points in front of Jason Skyberg. Jackson was 172 points behind Skyberg in third.

Ken Omundson Sr. won his 1st main event of the season moving him from the 11th spot to 9th in the final standings. Skyberg finished the main in 3rd just in front of Quinn assuring Quinn the Championship. Randy Sellars 5th place finish a Steve Waswicks 6th place finish moved both men up to 3rd and 4th in the final standings over Jackson in fifth.

Quinn dominated the division this season qualifying quickest 7 of the 8 races held. Quinn also won 3 main events, Skyberg one two while Jackson, James Todd and Omundson each won one.

It was not sierra Jackson’s night. Her luck in the ISRL division carried over to her Legend Car. She qualified 2nd quick behind the point’s leader Mike Cullum. Cullum qualified with a 15.486 while Jackson timed in at 15.509. Jackson and Cullum both chased down Tom Matheson in the heat race but came up short. Jackson 2nd followed by Cullum.

Jacvkson started 7th in the 30-lap heat race and had moved up to the 4th spot on the first lap coming out of 3 on the 2nd lap 2 cars in front made contact and blocked the track. Jackson had nowhere to go and she was into Matheson and Dan Eckert was into her the 3 came to rest at the top of turn 4. All 3 cars were retired from the race.

Cullum went on to win the 20 lap main event for his 5th win out of 6 races so far this season. Jackson is the only other driver to score a victory in this division this season. With 2 races left in the season Cullum holds a 150-point lead over Jackson. The Legends end the season in a two-day show with the Northwest Sprintcar racing association September 29th and 30th.

Pat Stirm won the 30 lap main event opening up his lead to 60 points over Vince Spinazzolo. This is the biggest point spread between the leaders all season. Terry Lydell moved into the third spot 22 points behind Spinazzolo. Darrell Lankford sits 107 points behind Stirm with an even 500 points. With 2 races remaining in the season there is still a battle for the top spot in this division. Brian Hyde and Steve Bosselman are in 5th and sixth respectively over 170 plus points back.
