On Saturday night the Late Model Challenge Series concluded their season on Evergreen Speedway’s .646-mile oval. Roger Habich (Monroe, WA) took the lead from early race leader Naima Lang (Lynnwood, WA) and went on to win the 75-lap main. A fifth place finish for Troy Conrad (Tacoma, WA) was all he needed to win the 2006 LMCS championship. Rob Touchette (Lake Stevens, WA) finished second with Shelby Thompson (Spokane, WA) was third.
Habich’s win was not without drama. As he was passing lapped cars he was cut off going into turn one and on the avoidance move ended sideways into the inside of the turn and became airborne landing back on the track and somehow kept off the wall and maintained the lead.
Troy Conrad started the night with a 14-point lead over Shelby Thompson. After qualifying that lead grew to 17-points. A safe fifth place finish and a third place run for Thompson the final point difference is a lucky 13.
The season ending LMCS race had a large car count with 34-cars. There were some problems for a few of the drivers in the practice sessions and 28 started the main.
