Riverside resident Randel King returned to one of his favorite tracks on the Lucas Oil ASA Speed Truck Challenge Series presented by Go Fast last Saturday when the series visited the Orange Show Speedway for the third and final time in 2006.
King drove his #35 Hype Manufacturing/Clay Andrews Racing Dodge Dakota truck to a third place finish in the 100 lap main event. King’s top five finish came after posting the third fastest time in qualifying over sixteen other competitors. “We were very excited to be heading back to the Orange Show Speedway for this event, we have experienced some success at the tight little quarter mile and we had hoped to continue with even more success this weekend after a disappointing eight place finish two weeks ago in St. John’s” said King. King suffered engine problems at St. John’s Grand Prix from the onset and although the talented crew led by Dallas Leininger thrashed all weekend to find the problem, King suffered a serious hit to the rookie point standings. The team bounced back and put forth an effort to regain those points this weekend at OSS.
Darren Young of Gilbert, AZ lead every lap to capture his third main event win in row and sixth of the season. Jim Putman, Ontario finished second with King third and rounding out the top five were Victor Pfluger, Morristown, AZ and Todd McLauchlan, Santee.
What makes Randel King different from other teenagers is that he is the developmental driver for Clay Andrews Racing who also fielded the #84 Ranchwood Homes Chevrolet driven by David Gilliland in the NASCAR Busch Series. Gilliland shocked the NASCAR world when he won the Busch race at Kentucky Speedway in only his seventh series start.
The next ASA Speed Truck Challenge Series event for Randel King is a road course race, at the Firebird International Raceway in Arizona on October 7th, for more information check out his website at www.randelkingracing.com.![]()
