SAN BERNARDINO – Justin DeJaynes used the time-honored “bump and run” technique to take the lead with one lap to go in the ASA Late Model main event and held on to capture his first win of the season Saturday night at Orange Show Speedway.
DeJaynes, of Lancaster, started third in the 13-car field, but lost a position early and was running fourth when the yellow caution flag waved on lap 20 after second- and third-place runners Anthony Mainella and Jim Conklin got together in Turn 4. That incident moved DeJaynes into second behind race-long leader Brian Malone of Grand Terrace and he pushed the nose of his Chevrolet Monte Carlo into the lead as they crossed start-finish to start lap 35.
Malone went to the low side of the track exiting the final turn, but wasn’t able to complete the pass and settled for second ahead of class leader Eric Ferguson, of El Cajon. Ferguson holds a 42-point lead over Palmdale’s Mainella with only the Oct. 28 finale remaining.
Highland’s Jim Edmiston capped a championship season in the ASA Sport Truck class by winning that 20-lap main event over points runner-up Ed Reid, of Moreno Valley, and 2005 champion Spencer Samaro, of San Bernardino.
Edmiston was the 2005 Pony Stock champion, but is not in the top three with one race to go this year. Riverside’s Jim Mardis is 28 points ahead of Corona’s Adrianne Murlin after those two finished 1-2 in Saturday’s 25-lap contest. Mardis, who was involved in an opening lap accident, took the lead from Murlin on lap 20 and won despite losing part of his front fender and his exhaust pipe and muffler.
Bonita’s Michael Jackson also celebrated a championship after finishing third behind Mike Salm of Fallbrook and Lloyd Mack of Los Angeles in the 25-lap Modified main. However, following the race Mack was moved from second to seventh as a penalty for failing to present his car for technical inspection. Two others drew similar penalties, and another was disqualified for an altercation in the pits.
West Coast Pro Truck leader Jeff Williams got his first win of the season in their 35-lap feature. The Newbury Park driver set fast time in qualifying and dueled Mentone’s Tony Edwards for the lead in the early going, then took command on lap 8 and won easily. Williams has finished in the top five in all 11 races.
