Riverside resident Randel King had never seen the 1.2 mile west road course at Firebird Raceway in Phoenix, AZ before last weekend when the Lucas Oil ASA Speed Truck Challenge Series presented by Go Fast visited the multi-track facility for the one and only time in 2006.
King drove his #35 Hype Manufacturing/Clay Andrews Racing Dodge Dakota truck to a third place finish in the timed main event. King’s top three finish came after posting the third fastest time in qualifying over nineteen other competitors. “We had never been here before and then we had transporter problems and missed the test we scheduled last month so I put the many laps of road course experience from karting to good use this weekend and battled back from a stop and go penalty to salvage a third place finish” said King.
Alan Rudolph, Phoenix, AZ drove the teams #0 Hype Manufacturing/Clay Andrews Racing Dodge Dakota to a sixth place finish after leading early in the event. Rudolph is also a development driver for Clay Andrews Racing. Lee Hatch, Upland was victorious after a close duel with Scott Dodd, Riverside who finished second.
What makes Randel King different from other teenagers is that he is the developmental driver for Clay Andrews Racing who also fielded the #84 Ranchwood Homes Chevrolet driven by David Gilliland in the NASCAR Busch Series. Gilliland shocked the NASCAR world when he won the Busch race at Kentucky Speedway in only his seventh series start.
The next ASA Speed Truck Challenge Series event for Randel King is on the tight 1/4 –mile Havasu 95 Speedway in Arizona on October 21st. For more information check out his website at www.randelkingracing.com.![]()
