Austin Cameron scored his second win of the year, while Eric Holmes clinched the championship as the NASCAR Grand National Division, AutoZone West Series wrapped up its 2006 season with the Altamont 200 at Altamont Motorsports Park on Sunday.
Although Holmes led much of the competition, his title chances were threatened late in the event when the right rear tire on his car developed a slow leak. However, he was able to pit under caution, return to action on the lead lap and finish fifth.
Mike David, who entered the race trailing Holmes by 47 points, saw his championship hopes fade when he also suffered a similar fate with a flat tire in the first half of the race. Mechanical woes later in the race left David to finish 13th.
Cameron, who started fifth on the grid, slipped past Holmes to take the lead on lap 113. Holmes battled back, but relinquished the lead to Cameron when he headed to the pits on lap 185. Series veteran Scott Gaylord followed Cameron across the line, with Johnny Borneman in third. Tim Woods III was fourth, followed by Holmes.
Holmes wrapped the title by 83 points over David.
