CONCORD, North Carolina --Drivers from all corners of the country flocked to South Boston, Virginia on Friday for the first day of the inaugural Mason-Dixon Meltdown, but the Northerners were the class of the field in time trials for Saturday’s 250-lap events for the PASS South Super Late Models and the Tour-Type Modifieds.
Cassius Clark set fast time for Saturday’s 250-lap PASS South Super Late Model season finale at the Mason-Dixon Meltdown. His lap of 15.110 seconds at 95.301 mph narrowly beat out fellow PASS North regular Ben Rowe for the fast lap of the day. Another Maine native, just as Clark and Rowe are, Corey Williams timed third, while Florida’s Travis Kittleson led the charge for the Southerners by qualifying fourth. The top-eight PASS South qualifiers will enter Saturday’s Dash, while heat races will set the remainder of the field for both 250-lap Mason-Dixon Meltdown Saturday events.
PASS South championship contenders Mike Rowe and Ryan Lawler will each have top-10 starting positions Saturday, with Rowe qualifying fifth and Lawler timing eighth. Rowe leads Lawler by just 12 points going into Saturday’s season finale.
Another Northeasterner, New York’s Chuck Hossfeld, drove his #79 Hillbilly Racing entry to the fast time in Tour-Type Modified time trials, earning him the DMC Auto Exchange Modified Pole Award. Fellow Northerner Bobby Grigas, III turned heads with his second-place time trial effort. Burt Myers led the Southern drivers’ contingent by qualifying third. Burt’s brother Jason Myers timed fourth, while Northerner Jim Storace timed fifth.
Thomas Hartensveld was the first feature winner of Meltdown weekend by topping the 50-lap Legends Semi-Pro feature Friday night. In the Legends Pro/Masters feature, Casey Roderick blasted through the field after starting deep in the pack to take the checkered flag. Full-field results from both Legends features will be made official this week.
