FONTANA, Calif. -- T. J. Acker grabbed the lead early and held off the defending national champion to win the Spec Racer Ford race at California Speedway Saturday.
Saturday’s race was part of a double regional Cal Club event that also includes a Sports Car Club of America national points race. The second round of regional races and the national races will be held Sunday.
In all, cars in 33 classes entered the event. Some classes have races in both national and regional competition, taking the number of class designations above 50.
Acker (Aqua Dulce, Calif.) started on the pole Saturday and, though he had 2006 national SRF champion Mike Miserendino (Beverly Hills, Calif.) in close contact with him, he never trailed.
Sunday’s racing begins at 8 a.m. with the national classes. National points races last 16 laps or 35 minutes. The second round of regional racing starts at 12:45. The regional races will last 25 minutes. The California Speedway road course includes the front straight and first two corners of the superspeedway and twists through portions of the infield.
