Lynch scores ninth win
Scott Lynch (No. 29 Jasper Engines & Transmissions Dodge) scored his ninth
career win in the NASCAR Grand National Division, West Series with a victory
in the Allstate Texas Thunder 150 at Thunder Hill Raceway in Kyle, Texas, on
Saturday. Lynch, who won the series championship as a rookie in 2003, plans
to focus on running a limited schedule in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series
this season. Because he only raced a couple of times last year, however, he
opted to run the first two West Series races this season.
Familiar visitor
A familiar face to the West Series was in the garage area at the Kyle event.
Shane Wilson, who won a championship as crew chief with Orleans Racing in the
West Series, took time out from his current job as crew chief of Richard Childress
Racing’s NASCAR Busch Series entry to provide some assistance to race
winner Scott Lynch.
Another Budweiser Pole for Duncan
Mike Duncan (No. 9 Lucas Oil/Ron’s Rear Ends Chevrolet) collected his
17th career Budweiser Pole Award in the season opener in Texas, setting a track
record by lapping the 3/8-mile track at 90.995 mph in time trials. Duncan moved
to seventh on the list of all-time Career Pole Winners for the West Series.
Sunoco Rookie of the Race
Jason Bowles (No. 22 Sunrise Ford/Turbo Torq Ford) was the top finishing rookie
at Kyle. He crossed the finish line in fifth overall, giving him a top-five
finish in his series debut. Bowles has taken the initial lead among a talented
field of 12 rookies who have registered for the Sunoco Rookie of the Year program
this season.
Top 10 for two other newcomers
Two other series rookies each notched a top-10 finish in their West Series debut
at Kyle. David Mayhew (No. 26 Crown Harvesting/Attune Systems/BC Chevrolet)
finished sixth, while Ryan Foster (No. 21 Golden Gate Meat Chevrolet) crossed
the line in 10th.
POWERade Power Move
Andrew Myers (No. 44 Toyota of Escondido Chevrolet) won the POWERade Power Move
of the Race Award at Kyle. He charged forward from 20th on the grid to finish
ninth. At each Grand National Division event, POWERade presents the award to
the driver who advances the most positions.
Featherlite Most Improved
Mike David (No. 2 Bennett Lane Winery Ford) won the Featherlite Most Improved
Driver Award in Texas. David, who finished 13th in last year’s season
finale, came home second at Kyle. Featherlite presents the award at each event
to the driver who improves the most finishing positions from the previous event.
Aero Exhaust lap leader
By virtue of leading the most laps at Texas, Scott Lynch won the Aero Exhaust
“Lap Leader” award. The award goes to the eligible driver who leads
the most laps in an event.
