The NASCAR Whelen All American Series continues this Saturday April 28 at the "The Super Speedway of the West" so named by Dave Pearson when he visited and raced at Evergreen in the late 1970's. Today the speedway boasts a 5/8's mile oval, a 3/8's mile oval, a 1/5-mile oval, a Figure Eight track, a modified road course, several different Drifting courses including a FormulaD Course, and a 1/8-mile drag strip.
This Week the "almost too tough to tame" 3/8's oval and the Northwest's premiere Figure Eight Track will host heated racing action. The NASCAR Whelen All American Series Speedway Chevrolet Super Stocks have a Track Championship and Washington State NASCAR Championship battle brewing with Kelly Mann (Monroe, Wa.) holding on to a two-point lead over former two-time champion John Zaretzke (Monroe, Wa.) who is tied with two-time defending champion Shane Harding (Langley, BC). The ambitious Roger Habich (Monroe, Wa.) and sophomore driver Naima Lang (Snohomish, Wa.) round out the top five. A growing field of newcomers has bolstered the competition this season as both Holden's (Mike & Jeff) sons of former 4-time champion Rob Holden and Doug Wilkinson have added depth to a fantastic bunch of racers. This week rumors are that Jill Lang, wife of Naima Lang and Les Schwab Tires Bomber driver, will practice Friday in Ron Fritzley's Super Stock. This is the same car Kevin Hamlin drove to victory in the season opener. She could be preparing to make her first start in the Speedway Chevrolet Super Stock Division.
Meanwhile, The Les Schwab Tires Bombers are also beginning their run to a Track Championship. With a victory last week Brian Cottrell (Marysville, Wa.) is tied atop the standings with Steve Ptacek (Kirkland, Wa.). Veteran racer Craig Rowalt (Arlington, Wa.) is just two points behind the co-leaders with Rookie of the Year candidate Steve Peters and Joe Kneeland rounding out the top five.
In the Super Figure Eight Division the Rookie of the Year candidate Sean Peters takes the point lead after his exciting victory last week. Former champion John (The Cowboy) Carlson and Peters were tangled, spinning and other wise going in all different directions as they crossed the finish line. Sean has said that he would like to "Be the first one to win Rookie of the Year and the Championship in the same season". His father Steve Peters may well be going after the same thing in the Les Schwab Tires Bomber Division. Ryan Gunderson, Jerry Funden & Josh Beckel make up the top five.
Defending Stinger Eight Champion Cody Koroshes is in firm command of the strong field of Stinger eights. Last year's nemesis Mike Middleton continues shadowing Koroshes in second place while Josh Beckel, Ben "The Wizard" Chandler and Sean Peters fill out the top five spots in the points.
The Northwest Legends make their first appearance of the year and will return the following week as well. Their quick turning in and out pace brings added excitement.
