With track surface repairs completed just hours before, Mother Nature did a great job of washing off the track in the early morning making the facility ready for another evening of NASCAR Short Track excitement. Both the NASCAR Factory Stocks and the NASCAR Late Models were set to qualify and last years Rookie of the Year, Casey Rohrer, broke the existing track record in NASCAR Factory Stocks with a time of 18.529 and Ron Norman again set the pace for the NASCAR Late Models. The NASCAR Factory Stock Trophy Dash was won by young Jeremy Smith and Tempe Arizona's Scott Rueschenberg won the NASCAR Late Model Trophy Dash with his crate engine powered Late Model. The evening's heat races were won by Rookie, Mat Williams and Mike Egurola in Late Models and Casey Rohrer and Tom Mikla in Factory Stocks. Only two cars were entered in the NASCAR Mini Stock and TRP Modifieds classes and they were relegated to exhibition status. The Demo Derby was staged during the intermission and Chris Mitchell was the last car running at the end of the Crashfest! Seven year old Alexis Carney drove her pink quarter midget around the TRP oval to the thrill of the crowd while the Demo Derby was being prepped.
The forty lap NASCAR Factory Stocks main was a nail bitter for all forty laps with Casey Rohrer beating Tom Mikla by a narrow margin. The NASCAR Late Model main took three attempts to get going resulting in Ed Ochylski, Dave Larson, Scott Rueschenberg and Jerry Thitchener never completing a lap. Once the forty lap race got going it was two and three abreast throughout all forty laps. When the checkerds were thrown by Tucson Raceway Park's new flagman, Mitchell Milner, it was "Stormin" Ron Norman winning another one over Rookie Duane Hunt Jr. and J.D. White. White was later DQ'd in post race tech moving last years Bud Shootout winner Mike Egurola to third.
Six Bomber Lites did battle on TRP'S unfinished 3/16 mile oval for ten laps that was exciting to say the least. When all the dust had settled, it was Karl Griggs taking the glory! All of the fans in attendance saw great racing and not a drop of rain!![]()
