Schmidt Puts Hammer Down, Nails “Berco Redwood Twin 50’s”
Roseville’s Eric Schmidt dominated both halves of Saturday night’s NASCAR Whelen All American Series Berco Redwood Twin 50’s for Late Models at the All American Speedway, in Roseville.
In the first 50, Schmidt, starting from the 5th position, took the lead from pole sitter Chuck Glick on lap 17. It was clear sailing from there to the checkers.
Rounding out the top five in the first Berco Redwood 50 lap was: 2nd Gary Glenn, 3rd John Moore, 4th Paul Harraka, and 5th Harold Reiker Jr.
Gary Glenn earned the RPM Indoor Kart “Hard Charger” award for advancing the most positions from start to finish in the first Berco Redwood Late Model 50 lap race.
In the second 50, Schmidt starting from the ninth position, took the lead once again on lap 12 and fought off Gary Glenn and John Moore bringing his AT&T Yellow Pages Monte Carlo to victory circle, not once, but twice.
In the second half it was: 2nd John Moore, 3rd Gary Glenn, 4th Jim Courage Jr., and 5th Bennie Moon.
Late model veteran John Moore was fastest qualifier, at 13.501.
The Late Model Trophy Dash saw Schmidt narrowly edge past Bennie Moon to win. Sixteen-year-old Jonathon Hale, who came up through the WSRA ranks, was third in just his second race and first dash in a Late Model.
Eric Schmidt earned the RPM Indoor Kart “Hard Charger” award for advancing the most positions from start to finish in the second Berco Redwood Late Model 50 lap race.
Legends
In the visiting Legend Division, Zachary Kavert won the 35 lap A-Main. Davis Fisher started from the point. Joel Courage led laps one and two until Frankie Marks took the lead on lap three. Marks battled Micah Parmar for much of the next 15 laps until he was eventually overtaken by Parmar on lap 17. With just four laps to go, Parmar was passed by Kavert who drove it home for the win.
The rest of the top five was: 2nd Johnny Green, 3rd Derek Copeland, 4th Frankie Marks, and 5th David Winchel
Kavert was fastest in qualifying as well, with a time of 15.584 and best speed of 77.001mph. Green was second at 15.667 and 76.593mph.
In the B-Main, Fred Clement edged Jack Humphery to bring home the win.
Minicups
In the Minicup division, Jarrett Kelly tangled with Tyler Thomas for most of the 25 lap A Main. In the end, it was Kelly over Thomas by less than 2 seconds.
The rest of the top 5 shaped up like this: 3rd Dylan Hutchison, 4th Mychal Tripoli, 5th Josh Gomes
Robbie Roy was the fastest qualifier (16.739). Thomas was second (16.755), and Shane Lawrence was third (16.889).
The trophy dash went to Tyler Thomas. Josh Gomes beat William Camara to win the B-Main.
Mini Stocks
In the Mini Stock division, a division previously struggling for cars, drivers delivered a car count large enough to warrant a 35 lap main event, and the fans were not disappointed!
Jason Romero took the lead from Matt Beardsley on lap 16 and never looked back. Beardsley, who was seriously injured last season in a freak infield accident, showed he was once again up to the challenge and finished second. Dave Travis was third, Earl Lee of Rio Linda was fourth and Terry Shannon was fifth.
Romero was fastest in qualifying with a fast time of 15.185 and a best speed of 79.025mph. In the trophy dash it was Dale Bulmer over last year’s Mini Stock Champ, James Trethewey.
Baby Grands
In the Baby Grand Division, 16 year old Michael Ray, starting from the 6th position, drove directly to the front and took the lead on lap 11. Ray battled Justin Henry lap for lap to win the 19 lap A-Main. Fourteen-year-old Jake “The Snake” Gomes (’05 -‘06 Minicup Champ) was 3rd, followed by Michael Sandoval in 4th and Jerry Fellman finishing 5th.
