ROOKIE DRIVER WINS SUPER LATE MODEL MAIN EVENT AT ORANGE SHOW SPEEDWAYORANGE SHOW SPEEDWAY
Source: OSS Media Relations/js
Stockman, 20, started on the pole for the 40-lap race and never relinquished the lead despite almost constant pressure from points leader Rick Chavez and fast qualifier Charles Price. The Chevrolet of Price was gone after 15 laps of the quarter-mile oval, however, due to a malfunctioning transmission. But his place in the pursuit was taken by Frankie Gould and defending class champion Glen Cummings and 2005 champion John Manke.
In addition to the veteran challengers, Stockman had to quiet his nerves during six restarts after yellow caution flags, the final one with 10 laps remaining.
Chavez, who has one win this season, got inside Stockman several times, but never far enough under him to make a pass, and in the final three laps Stockman pulled away slightly. Gould raced in third throughout. Cummings and Manke charged from 11th and 10th, respectively, after being sent to the rear of the field following a collision with 18 laps to go. Cummings had won the past two main events.
Eddie Secord continued his mastery of the Pro 4 division by setting fast time and winning for the fourth time in five races in his Fiesta Village Pontiac Grand Prix. The Oak Hills driver took the lead from points leader Rex Lockwood on lap 4 and the two ran in that order to the finish of the 30-lap contest.
Tony Dumont of Irvine had a perfect evening in the Factory Fours class, setting fast time in qualifying, winning the trophy dash and a heat race, then taking the 25-lap main event in his black Mercedes Benz.
Jimmy Rouse Jr. made some interesting dinner table conversation likely by beating his step-mother, Michelle Rouse, in the 25-lap Stock Cars USA main event and putting them in a tie for second four races into the season. Division leader Mark Whitson, who had won the first three races, started last in the 10-car field and finished fourth. He leads the Rouses by eight points.
In the opening main event of the night, a 15-lap contest for the Jr. Mini StocKars, Benjamin Mahan, 11, of Hesperia won his fourth race of this year and his 12th in a row over two years. Mahan stalked Tony Forfa IV, 9, until the next-to-last lap, then took the lead and pulled away.
