POTASHNICK ROUNDS OUT THE TOP TEN AT ROCKY MOUNTAIN RACEWAYSNASCAR Winston West Series
Source: Michele Adams
Adding another chapter to the 2000 NASCAR Winston West Series schedule, driver of the No. 65 car Sammy Potashnick finished Rocky Mountain Raceways' Labor Day Bank One 250 in 10th place. Although Potashnick landed a 3rd-place finish at Salt Lake City's Rocky Mountain Raceways last year, he should feel satisfied in grasping a top-10 finish this year as he has had somewhat of a "trying" season. Potashnick's season opened with a short stint driving the Walker Evans Racing No. 20 car. After only a few months Potashnick and Walker Evans Racing parted ways. Potashnick's limited PTI Trucking and WW Transport sponsorship dollars are being used toward his own No. 65 SP Racing team, as it was in the previous season. The operation is being supervised by Potashnick and teammate Chuck Day, who has stepped up as SP Racing's current crew chief. The operation is full of inexperience but is certainly not lacking in effort. They have been working out of a shop in Bakersfield, California, that belongs to fellow Winston West driver Steve Portenga who has partly assisted in the daily operation as well. Because SP Racing did not have a car of its own set to go for the Rocky Mountain Raceways' event, Potashnick rented Portenga's backup car. Jeff Moore and Ben Kierzek, who have been with SP Racing in the past, were there to assist Potashnick and Day in the effort to get the race car at its best. Potashnick is very appreciative of their efforts, as well as to newcomers Chad Townsend and Jake Woods and volunteer help received from Michael Haun, Aaron Lucky, and Brandon Cramer. "Considering the fact that we're pretty much running without sponsorship and that we're as inexperienced at setting cars up as we are, we've got to be somewhat satisfied with how things have been going," Potashnick explained. "Monroe, Washington, was the first race we went to on our own. We got a car together at the very last minute, got a quick pick-up team together, and we were able to finish in 2nd place," Potashnick commented. "We've got a lot to learn, but we plan on having it together enough to end the Winston West season with a couple of strong finishes."
The Rocky Mountain Raceways' race received tape-delayed television coverage
that will air on Speedvision on September 29 at 12 p.m. (EST) and again on
October 2 at 2 p.m. (EST).
