The All American Speedway in Roseville will feature Sprint Cars on Saturday May 26 for the first USAC race in Roseville in 30 years. The race is co-sanctioned by CASA and USAC. USAC's California Pavement Ford Focus Midget Series is also part of the May 26 schedule.
Excitement is building as Jimmy Sills of Placerville returns from a 5-year hiatus to run in the Lucas Oil Western Sprint Car Series race. Sills is the only 3-time champion in USAC Silver Crown Series history, having raced and beaten Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Davey Hamilton and others in his career. Race Re-Cap 5/19/07 by Chase Montgomery, track announcer:
It was a Long Winter’s Night!
Scott Winters, in his Ferrari Farms #24, was the class of the thirty-two car Modified A-Main field Saturday night at The All American Speedway in Roseville, Ca.
Winters started fifth, battled Scott Alves and Eddie Laws for the first fourteen laps. In a race that was not without its cautions, Winters took the lead on lap fifteen and was never seriously challenged on the way to his second consecutive victory of the season.
“I just tried to hit all my marks and get great restarts”, Winters said afterwards. “I really want to thank my crew for giving me such a great car right off the truck. Thanks so much to my sponsors Ferrari Farms! I really love racing at All American (Speedway)! The fans are awesome!”
Rounding out the top five were: Scott Alves, who drove a rock solid race, came home second; Eddie Laws, who had a top three car all day was third; Les Friend, getting more and more seat time in a Modified, finished fourth, and veteran Jim Miller was fifth. Points leader Rich Lindgren finished tenth.
Earlier in the afternoon in qualifying, Rich Lindgren had fast time with a 13.955/ 85.990 mph. Jay Linstroth was second at 13.969. Winters was third at 13.982.
In the four car, four lap trophy dash, two false starts sent the front row to the back and moved Jay Linstroth to the inside pole. Though Linstroth’s car struggled with a fuel cell problem all day, he managed to limp his car to the stripe first to win. Lindgren was second, Winters third, and Les Friend was fourth.
Mikey Lehman won the Modified B Main.
The Modifieds return this Saturday night (5/26) for a 50 lap event.
In the Street Stock A-Main, the finish was one of the best of the season. On lap 50, two veteran drivers, Mel Wilson and Mickey Owens battled door to door in a drag race off turn four to a photo finish. Computer controlled transponders showed that Wilson edged Owens by .005 of a second after 50 laps of competition.
However in post race inspection, it was determined that Wilson’s transponder was positioned too close to the front of the car allowing it to register as having crossed first. Upon further evaluation by track officials, the win was taken away from Wilson and given to Owens. The win makes it two in a row for Owens in his search for a track championship. Wilson finished second, Dan Farrington third, Doug Wade fourth, and Dick Meadows was fifth.
Matt Cockrum started from the pole and looked strong early until cutting down a tire on lap 32. The mishap ruined what was the best run of his season. Points leader Josh Whitfield struggled with an oil pressure problem and left the track without qualifying. The team replaced the engine, started from the rear of the field, and still managed to charge his way to a sixth place finish.
Earlier in the day in qualifying, Farrington had the fast time at 15.183/ 79.035. David Thompson was second at 15.199 and Mickey Owens was third at 15.272.
Doug Wade was the trophy dash winner for the Street Stocks.
Look for the Street Stocks in a 75 lap Main event at The All American Speedway Saturday night June 2nd!
In the Mini Stock Division… early on in the 25 lap A-Main, Pole Sitter Terry Shannon battled a strong Daryl Trueblood. James Trethewey (06 Mini Stock Champion) took the lead on lap 6 only to give it up to Jason Romero on lap 11. A battle of two great drivers had Romero out dueling James Trethewey for the win. The win is Romero’s second of the season and second in a row.
Rounding out the top five, Matt Beardslee again drove a strong race to finish third, Dave Travis was fourth, and Terry Shannon was fifth.
In qualifying, Romero had the fast time with a 15.425/ 77.795mph. Beardslee was second fast at 15.479 and Trethewey was third at 15.649.
Beardslee won the trophy dash for the Mini Stocks beating Romero, Trethewey, and Travis respectively.
Don’t miss the return of the Mini Stocks Saturday night, June 9th!
The Bomber A-Main was a demonstration of professional driving and perhaps the cleanest race of the evening. Joe Torres took the lead from Dana Kelly on the second lap and was strong early. Johnny Vega led laps 15-19 but was passed for the lead by Todd Clapham in lap 20. From there it was all Clapham, as he knuckled down and drove his heart out for the win. The other top five finishers were Richard Anable second, Johnny Vega third, Brian Dalton crossed fourth, and Todd Clapham’s brother Troy was fifth.
Mike Sherril had the Bomber fast time in qualifying with a 16.006/ 74.971mph. Troy Clapham was second at 16.254 and Johnny Vega was third at 16.270.
Sherrill also brought home the trophy dash. Vega was second, Clapham brothers Todd and Troy were third and fourth.
The Bombers are scheduled next for 50 laps Saturday night June 2nd.
