![]() 2006 ESI Rocky Mountain Challenge Series champion Dave Minegar of Boise, Idaho scored the hat trick Monday night at Rocky Mountain Raceways by setting fast time, winning his heat race and marching through the 25-car field to score his first victory of the season in the Young Chevrolet “100”. The win also vaulted Minegar into the RMCS point lead by 36 markers over Bryan Warf.
“I was really excited to go to RMR after the Magic Valley Race,” said Minegar. “I had a really good car at MVS but a few mistakes on the track took me out of position to win. It was a long wait between races, and I couldn’t wait to get back to the track.”
Minegar and his BodyBuilding. Com team built a new Port City Anderson Elite Chassis over the winter and their hard work paid off in only their second race on the chassis as Minegar turned a fast lap of 15.149 to earn his first Sharp Powder Coating Fast Time Award at RMR and his tenth of his RMCS career.
“Our team works hard on qualifying because of the way the point system works in the RMCS,” stated Minegar.
Minegar knew he had a good car after qualifying, but he gained more momentum after winning his 12 lap heat race from the eighth position. Minegar worked his way to the front passing his Minegar Racing teammate Craig Bell for the win.
“I worked through traffic and caught Craig with a few laps to go, but it was a strange feeling because I have never had a teammate before,’ said Minegar. “I wasn’t sure how hard I should run Craig in a heat race, but when he slipped up I took advantage and got the win.”
Minegar and his team made a few changes on the car before they staged it for the Young Chevrolet “100”. The RMCS inverts the top twenty qualifiers placing Minegar in the 19th starting position (Chris Cook exited the track during the pace laps so the entire field moved up one position) in the 25 car field. Minegar found himself in eighth position after the first yellow flew at lap 32 for a spin. Minegar slowly picked off car after car and broke into the top five on lap 48.
“I had been watching the lead cars and I knew that I had my work cut out for me if I was going to win this race. Zan Sharp, Bobby Latham and Jim Eaton were setting the pace, and I set my sights on picking them off.”
Minegar settled in fourth and waited to make a late race charge on the leaders. Sharp pulled off on lap 58 due to mechanical issues putting Minegar in third. Minegar got by Eaton on lap 61, but by then Latham had a 2 second advantage. Minegar made the most of a caution on lap 72 to close the gap on Latham and moved into the lead on lap 75. Minegar maintained his strangle hold on the top spot and lead the final 25 laps to claim his third career RMCS victory over Eaton, Parker and teammate Bell.
“I can’t even explain what it feels like to finally win at RMR for me and my team,” said Minegar. “We worked so hard for this, and I am really proud of our whole team.”
Minegar Racing’s next race will be the Pepsi 125 at Magic Valley Speedway on Saturday, June 9th.
