MINEGAR LEADS ESI ROCKY MOUNTAIN CHALLENGE SERIES INTO MVS

BOISE, Idaho -- When the ESI Rocky Mountain Challenge Series rolls into town Saturday night for the running of the Pepsi "125" at Magic Valley Speedway outside Twin Falls, Idaho, points leader David Minegar of Boise will have a lot on his mind. Minegar is fresh off a dominating performance on Memorial Day down in Salt Lake City but will have to contend with a whole field of seasoned Magic Valley veterans who will give him a run for his money.

Minegar is the track record holder at MVS with a quick lap of 14.284 seconds/ 83.926 mph around the tricky one-third mile paved oval. Minegar knows how important qualifying is if he hopes to maintain his point lead. especially with drivers who have experience at MVS. "Since we invert twenty cars in this series and pay passing points, qualifying is key," Minegar said. "Guys like Latham (Bobby) and Bruce Quale really know how to get around here and they'll be tough."

Minegar is the defending series champion and has one win at MVS coming back in 2005 but this is a whole new season and the competition is a different animal. "We are so glad to see Zan (Sharp) back in the series," Minegar said. "He is such a fun guy to race with and with Nick Parker running with us this year you have to keep your foot in it every lap or it will be a long night."

More than 25 of the areas top Late Model drivers will be on hand for the Pepsi "125", which used to be a traditional stop for the now defunct Northwest Tour. Leading the local contingent is 2006 track champion Bobby Latham who campaigns a Dodge on the RMCS. Latham is focused on the championship this season and has set high goals for he and his team. "We have a goal of winning a championship in every division or series we race in," Latham said. "We have kind of dug ourselves a hole to start the season but we are really looking forward to this event. We have a great car and the weather should be perfect!"

Echoing Latham is multi-time track champion Bruce Quale. Quale is coming off a disappointing finish in salt Lake and knows a little home cooking is on the menu. "We had some motor problems and just couldn't get the car to run. We think we have it figured out and we are really excited about the race. We came up a bit short last time here but hope to improve on it."

Making their first starts of the season will be former track and regional champion Eddy McKean and former truck racer Nick Lynch. Both drivers have excelled in the Southwest Tour where McKean won the Southwest title back in 2002. "The Rocky Mountain guys put on a good show and the fans really like the races," McKean said. "We are really looking forward to getting back in the car and having some fun." McKean has won one RMCS race back in 2004.

Mike Minegar, president of the ESI RMCS, likes the direction the series is heading and the events staged at Magic Valley Speedway. "Brian Bolton and Pepsi have really contributed to not only Magic Valley speedway but to our series as well," Minegar said. "Their confidence in the series means a lot and enables us to grow and attract new drivers. We feel we have the best racing platform of any series out there and our drivers can compete with anyone."

Bryan Warf of Boise won the first race of the year and is looking to make it three in a row at MVS. Warf and perennial front runner James Eaton of West Valley, Utah have two wins apiece at MVS while eight other drivers have visited victory lane once. One of those drivers is John Newhouse of Twin Falls who has had a difficult start to the 2007 campaign. "We have had some tough luck to start the season," Newhouse said. "We think we can turn it around Saturday night and are looking to get back into the winner's circle." Newhouse won at MVS last May.

The Pepsi "125" will be the 35th race in RMCS history with Warf and Eaton sharing the top spot with five victories apiece. David Minegar has the career Sharp Powder Coating fast time award with ten and has completed the most laps in series competition. He has also claimed more top ten finishes than anyone and is the career money winner.

Racing action gets underway at Idaho's action track at 7:05 MDT with a whole slate of local racing on tap including the Pepsi Premier Division, Napa Auto Parts Pony Stock and the Teen Bees.
