The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway has been the site of some amazing races in its first season, but the biggest and most powerful cars to hit the 3/8-mile track’s new pavement will invade this Saturday.
LVMS has received 42 entries for 28 starting spots as the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series makes its annual stop in Las Vegas for the StarNursery.com 250 Presented by Desert Orthopaedic Centers.
Four Las Vegas drivers are among those entered including NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Sunbelt Region champion Dick Cobb, along with LVMS regulars Chuck Trickle, Mike Ayers and Steve Anderson.
Las Vegas’ Kurt Busch, who will make his NASCAR Winston Cup debut this Sunday at Dover Down International Raceway, won last year’s event en route to the series championship.
“I believe between the four of us that one of us is capable of winning the event,” Ayers said. “We all know our way around as is evidenced by what we have done this year.”
The area drivers will be looking to knock off series points leader Matt Crafton, defending NASCAR Winston West Series champion Sean Woodside and many others.
“This will be our first time on the new track,” said driver Darrell LaMoure. “I think this is going to be one of our best races of the year. I have heard nothing but rave reviews about the place.”
Under NASCAR rules, the first 24 starting positions will be determined by qualifying speeds, the next two spots will be provisional starting spots based on driver standings and the final two spots will transfer in from a 20-lap qualifying race.
In addition to the StarNursery.com 250, the MSRA Pro 4 Series Late Models will run a 30-lap feature prior to the main event. A fireworks show will take place immediately following the Southwest Tour event.
Gates open at 4 p.m. and qualifying begins at 5 for the StarNursery.com 250. The MSRA Pro 4 event starts at 7:30 and the Tour race will follow.
