It is the weekend before the annual Midseason Championships and Fireworks Show at Skagit Speedway but that didn't deter some race teams from firing off early!
In the 410 division, 2005 champion Barry Martinez won his second main event of the season leading the last ten laps of the 25-lap feature. Toni Lutar led the first 14 laps after the initial start was called back when Brock Lemley and John Tharp got together, with Tharp turning over in turn 4. Martinez got by Lutar on a lap 15 restart then held off the pack to win. Rounding out the top 5 were Lutar, fast time Steve Kilcup (11.701), Danny Bullock and Colton Heath. The heat race winners were Heath and Tharp.
Brian Kirkpatrick started off the evening in the Budweiser 360 Sprints setting fast time at 11.915. The three heat races were won by Travis Jacobson, Dan Pierson and Bob Stevens. Danny Kirkpatrick set a blistering pace at the start of the 360 Main then got caught behind a slower car. When Kirkpatrick got on the brakes, Brock Lemley and Brian Kirkpatrick got past moving up to take over the top two spots. Through one more red and 3 yellow flags Lemley continued to hang on to the lead and the win. Finshing second through fifth were Danny Kirkpatrick, Jason Bloodgood, Kilcup and Nick Evans.
The Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints points leader continues to be Kevin Smith, as once again Smith proved it doesn't hurt to be lucky AND good. Smith followed Todd Rork for 15 laps before Rork lost his steering going into the fourth turn bringing out the red flag. On the lap 16 restart Smith powered off for the win with Jarrid Zimmerman, Glenn Reinstra, Kelleigh Johnson and Marc Schutte bringing home second through fifth place. Reinstra and Zimmerman won the heat races.
The Wilson Auto Brokers Outlaw Hornets ran a single main event this week with 35 cars taking the green flag. The race turned out to be a wild one with Greg Hibma leading laps one through nine, Cory Swatzina leading laps ten through fourteen, back to Hibma for lap 15. And the final two laps led by Ben Gunderson. A flip by Leslie Davies on lap 15 in turn 4 and another incident involving 3 other cars in turn two at the same time brought out the red flag. Gunderson took off on the restart and took the checkered flag ahead of Cory Swatzina, Ken Higby, Clayton Delano and Mike Ploeg. Gunderson and Hibma won the heat races.![]()
