A CLASSIC NIGHT AT THE RACES

More than 100 classic vehicles invaded the Douglas County Speedway Friday night during the annual Graffiti Night at the Races.

Car owners from surounding states paraded the track during intermission and several competed in a burnout competition during the intermission.

Dale Roth won the ASA Late Model main event after starting from the eighth and final position. The Roseburg racer took the lead on Lap 31 of 35 after most of the field had become involved in some sort of contact during earlier circuits.

“They were dropping like flies,” Roth said. “I knew to just keep the pedal to the medal and drive on the inside groove.”

Roth was followed to the checkered flag by Mark Pothoff of Dundee and Mike Brusco of Sunny Valley, respectively. Brusco started on the pole. Season points leader Adam Whitlock of Medford had his worst night of the season. Whitlock finished last in the main, last in the A Heat and qualified fourth fastest.

Pothoff, a rookie Late Model driver, asumed the points lead after his strong showing Friday.

Sutherlin’s Rod Scevers won the A Heat, Brusco won the B Heat, Pothoff took the trophy dash and Roth won the fast time award with a lap of 15.203 seconds. Scevers timed in a close second (15.205).

Promoter Adam Nelson added a quirk in the J-Car main. Billed as a J-Car Roller Derby, Nelson joined the field himself by piloting a minivan. Edgar Phillips was first to cross the finish line after 20 laps to lead his team of Clint Hatfield, Nick Corneilson and Nelson to victory. Dan Crume, Craig Senger, Tim Thorp and John Corneilson competed for the other team.

Phillips won the dash and Nick Corneilson was the fast timer in 19.331.

Portland’s Dave Bax won his second consecutive Old Time Racers of Oregon main. Bax snared the lead on Lap 2 and easily paced the field in the 20-lap event. Tim Jennings finished second and Bob Edwards was third. Roseburg’s Mike Batman won the dash and fast time (17.230), but suffered mechanical failure in the main and was not able to complete the race. Bax won the A Heat and Ted Deramus won the B Heat.

Ray Douglas led only one lap of the Limited Sprint feature, but it was after the white flag as the Winchester driver won his second main of the season. Kent Bower of Sutherlin was second and Tim Alberding of Portland finished third.

Alberding clocked the fastest lap of the night at 13.965. Matt Hein won the dash and Bower led every lap to capture the heat race.

David Lyons returned to the winner’s circle in the Hornet class. Lyons led the first 14 laps of the race, in which the second car to cross the finish line was dubbed the winner. After Lyons crossed the start line for the white-flag lap, he slowed up on the inside of the back stretch and Daniel Jobe passed him on the outside. Lyons then slid in tight behind Jobe as the pair drove to the finish. Ben Herbert Jr., a 14-year-old from Oakland, maintained his season points lead by finishing second. Josh Cox was third. Andy Nelson won the heat race.

Racing resumes next Saturday at the Douglas County Speedway featuring Super Stocks, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks, Super Hornets and Queen Bee Powder Puffs. The race is the second of four Cool FM -Bi-Mart $5 fever admission nights. Gates open at 4 p.m., with racing at 6:05 p.m.####
