Ron Bemis, veteran driver from Yakima, Washington won the 50 lap main event for ASA Late Models at Yakima Speedway Saturday evening. With triple digit temperatures and a new tire for the class the field had their work cut out for them. Defending champion, Christopher Kalsch, had engine problems during his qualifying run and switched to the Don Gibson machine for the feature. Mike Zamora had fast time with an 18.973 lap. The new tire appeared to cause some issues during the main event. Rookie, Rich Peters had a tire give out entering turn one and caused considerable damage to his Ford Focus. The resulting red flag for accident was the only slow down of the evening in the top three divisions main events. Bemis took over the lead on lap three and lead the entire event, but was pressed hard by Portland racer, Dan Obrist. Young rookie, Zach Moran finished a career high of third. Owen Riddle and Zamora rounded out the top five.
Brian Pepper won the caution free Super Stock main event. Past champion, Dusty John, lead the first fourteen circuits until Pepper moved to the outside to take over the point. Jeff Mullins battled an ill-handling car but had a great race with points leader Buck Noel Jr. Pepper held an impressive lead at the end, but the rest of field were extremely close.
The H & H Furniture Hobby class had seventeen cars take the green flag. Their 35 lap main event was also free of cautions, but the action was hot. Jerry Walker Jr. took over the point on lap two and was never headed. Walker had heavy pressure from Don Klang, Marcus Maggard, and Mel Patnode though out the entire race. Walker was never able to relax, as he was not able to shake his challengers. John Raney of Yakima finished in the fifth position. Brian Moser, Todd Connell, Bobby A. Trujillo and Ken Mullins sixth followed Jeff Stevenson, in his rookie debut.
The Bump to Pass cars had hard and hot crashing on their minds. Mike Valchick made it two wins in a row. He survived the eleven-car field to come home the winner.
Dave Peterson led the nineteen-car field to the checkered flag in the Hornet race. Reece Kastle was a steady second with Jesse Eaton, Steve Hall and A.J. Rose finishing in the fifth position.
Next event at the ½ mile paved oval is set for July 21, with the return of the Northwest legends. Also on the card will be the Hobbies, Hornets and Bump to Pass.![]()
