Redding's own Kyle Cattanach had a great homecoming as he came home the victor in the 100 lap West Car Late Model event at Shasta Raceway Park on Saturday night. Making his first start of the year at his home track in Anderson, Cattanach passed 2005 SRL Champion and SRL Late Model winner at Shasta Jason Fensler with 10 laps to go to win the event in front of his hometown fans.
Chris Straka was the winner in the 30 lap Pro 4 Modified feature, Anderson's Bobby Crowell won his third Bomber feature of the year, Bo Nicholson was the winner in the 15 lap Hornet feature.
Cattanach wasted little time from his outside front row starting position, moving past Randy Reeves on lap 2 to take command. Cattanach continued to lead as Fensler continued his charge to the front picking off points leader Jarred Beddow, Bobby Hodges and Reeves to move into second and pressure Cattanach. Fensler took the lead on lap 25 from Cattanach with a inside move going into turn three. At the half way point Fensler continued to lead over Cattanach, Beddow, Ron Strimiska Jr. and Bobby Hodges. A caution on lap 80 for a spin by Andy Livengood closed the field up, Cattanach began to pressure Fensler who began to fight a ill handling car, Cattanach made the winning pass on lap 90 as Fensler drove high into turn one allowing Cattanach to make a clean pass for the lead. A late race spin by Strimiska Jr. set up a green, white checkered finish, Cattanach held off the challenge from Fensler to record the popular win in front of his hometown fans. Bobby Hodges from Carson City finished third followed by Beddow and Paul Hanson.
Chris Straka waited until the end to win the 30 lap Pro 4 Modified feature, Straka passed pole sitter Codi Barba who had lead the entire race with two laps to go for the victory, Jake Tillman, Willie Leuzinger and Greg Van Cleave rounded out the top five.
Anderson's Bobby Crowell survived a lap 20 crash that involved the top four cars including himself to win the 25 lap Bomber feature. The crash on lap 20 involved leader at the time John Pederson, second running Joe Brattoli, Duane Hoffman and Crowell. Crowell who hit the turn two wall was the only one of the top four cars to stay on the track, both Pederson and Brattoli suffered flat tires and body damage, both drivers returned to the track after repairs. Hoffman's car was towed off with heavy front end damage, on the restart John Moe tried to hold off the charging Crowell, he for three laps before Crowell made the winning pass. Brattoli made a last lap pass on Moe to come home second, Randy File and Chester Brown rounded out the top five.
Bo Nicholson came home the winner in the 15 lap Hornet feature after leaders
Jim Campbell and Bill Swaney tangled on the last lap going down the
backstretch, Pete Smith finished second followed by JJ Crile, Peter Smith
and Joey Harris![]()
