IRWINDALE, California – With a busy work schedule, household chores, cooking, errands and chauffeuring the kids to little league and soccer practice, it’s the time of year known as the dog days of summer when Mom needs a break. Irwindale Speedway recognizes this and will do its part to “give Mom a break” this Saturday (August 11) on 1st Centennial Bank Night, admitting all Moms into the races for free. It will not be necessary for Mom to cook dinner as hot dogs and sodas will be specially priced at $1.00 each at the Speedway’s food concession stands. Special coupons admitting kids 12 and under for free may be obtained from the Speedway’s web site www.irwindalespeedway.com.
A busy night of racing is scheduled with six division races on tap including the ACDelco Super Late Models, King Taco Super Trucks, Vista Paint Super Stocks, K&N Ford Focus Midgets and the BG Products Pure Stocks oval track and figure 8 races.
Rip Michels of San Fernando has been the headliner in the ACDelco Super Late Model series with eight victories in his last ten races including his 52nd career victory in the last division outing on July 28. Michels has a 38 point division lead over rookie Travis Thirkettle of Newhall and Andrew Phipps of Simi Valley who are tied for second place.
With three consecutive victories, including an impressive led-from-start-to-finish win in his last King Taco Super Trucks outing on July 28, Matt Hicks of Santee is now only 28 points behind division leader Pat Mintey Jr. of Quartz Hill.
Up until the last Vista Paint Super Stocks race on July 28, points leader Darren Cheek of San Bernardino and second place Bryan Harrell of Riverside have dominated the victory circle with each accumulating four wins in the first eight division races of the season. In the last race, Greg Crutcher of Covina broke the dominant stretch by edging Cheek for the victory by a margin of only 0.315 seconds.
Only two points separate BG Products division leader Ron Davis of Norwalk and second place Jeff Elder of Redlands. However, Mark Whitson who had not competed in the division’s previous five races won the last race on July 14.
The USAC K&N Filters Ford Focus Midgets make the fourth of five appearances competing in a special K&N Filters sponsored series at Irwindale Speedway. Tim Skoglund of Fresno leads the division point standings and Beau Debard of Citrus Heights won the last outing on August 4.
The final race of the evening will feature the BG Products division competitors competing in a figure 8 race.
Spectator gates open at 4 p.m. for Saturday’s event with the King Taco fan appreciation autograph session with drivers, teams and race cars on the track at 5:45 p.m. The first race starts at 7 p.m.
