ANOTHER VICTORY FOR DARREN ROBERTSON DURING A COLORADO NATIONAL DOUBLE-HEADERCOLORADO NATIONAL SPEEDWAY
Source: Robertson Racing/rd
![]() Due to Colorado summer storms causing a rain-out last weekend, CNS turned the Aug. 11th “USG Hard Charger Night” into a double-header for the Late Model Division running twin 40-lap features. Current NASCAR Whelen All-American Series point leader Darren Robertson used this opportunity to stay on top by doubling up on strong finishes.
With temperatures hovering in the mid-90’s for the start of Saturday’s events at Colorado National Speedway, qualifying for the late model division proved to be just as hot, with the top ten qualifying times all coming within just a few tenths of quick time # 31, Rick Smith of Gering, NE at 16.129. The # 11 Robertson Racing Monte Carlo settled in for a seventh place qualifying spot at 16.348 on the 3/8 mile paved oval.
Having to schedule dual features, trophy dashes and B-main qualifying events were omitted from the night’s line-up in the late model division. In hoping to offer each of the teams on hand a chance to make both feature races, the twin-40-lap contests were slated as both the first and final main events.
Lining up in the fourth spot for the first feature, 21-year old Darren Robertson of Arvada, CO began a steady, yet aggressive pace to pass pole sitter # 27 Roger Avants of Littleton, CO and fellow Furniture Row sponsored competitor # 73 Barney Visser of Englewood. By lap-10 Darren had taken the lead and never looked back. Following a smooth and steady line around CNS’ compound banking, Robertson managed to hold off the charges of eventual second and third place finishers # 42 Ronnie Hults of Centennial and # 47 P.J. Mattorano of Trinindad, CO. Taking the checkers by a healthy margin, the # 11 Robertson Racing team hoped for a similar finish in the evenings latter event.
Following some lengthy and caution-plagued racing in the evenings support divisions, the late model field standing patiently in the staging area was ready to duel it out for yet another 40-laps. Getting led to the green flag by the front row of # 74 Dan Savage of Aurora, CO and the # 47of Mattorano, Robertson had his work cut out for him starting much further back in the twelfth position. Brief cautions for single car spins and debris seemed a constant every five to ten laps. Teams such as the # 11 of Robertson, # 22 Chris Eggleston of Erie, # 42 Hults, and # 31 Smith were fast, but couldn’t seem to break through mid-pack traffic as it bunched up for each caution period. Further forward in the field eventual race winner, the # 74 driven by Savage would hold a steady lead followed in tow by the # 47 of Mattorano at the checkers. Darren Robertson having fought hard for positions would have to settle in after his first race victory for seventh place in the night’s second feature race.
Watch for Darren and the rest of Robertson Racing to compete in next weeks 150-Lap late model touring series event at Colorado National Speedway on Aug. 18th. Not for track points, but gunning for a win nonetheless, this team looks to finish big.
