LAST POINT RACE BEFORE SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP AT SKAGIT SPEEDWAY

Point battles tightened as none of the season point leaders managed to win a main at Skagit Speedway. Just one point race remains, and that is the main events of Season Championship night September 1st.

Earlier in the week Rod Perkins was the front page story of the Sports section in the local paper and this Saturday night the headliner winning the 25-lap Budweiser 360 Sprint main event at Skagit Speedway. Perkins led all 25 laps, using lapped traffic to keep the cars battling for second place behind him and capturing his first main event of the season and gaining ground in the point battle for a season championship. Point leader Steve Kilcup finished twelfth. tightening the chase. Travis Jacobson finished second ahead of Robby Vaughn, Mitch Olson and Danielle Huson in the finest run of her young career. Vaughn timed in fastest with a 12.230 lap around the 3/10th mile clay oval. Heat race winners were Brian Kirkpatrick, Brock Lemley and Bob Stevens.

The point bettle between Brock Lemley and 2005 410 Sprint champion Barry Martinez tightened as Lemley blew his motor in the second heat race and Martinez finished fourth in his heat. Lemley's crew along with half the pit area pitched in and changed motors so he could make the 410 main event getting the job done just in time for Lemley to take the initial green flag. Jayme Barnes led all 25 laps, taking the lead off the start and never was challenged. It was Barnes third win on the season. Steve Kilcup finished second with Tayler Malsam, Mitch Olson and Danny Bullock rounding out the top 5. Martinez was 7th with Lemley 9th tightening the point battle even further with one point race to go. Kilcup set fast time at 11.880. Olson and Bullock won the heats.

Kelleigh Johnson made it two wins in a row in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Main Event. Leading all 20 laps, Johnson closed the point gap on leader Kevin Smith and second place Eric Fisher. Johnson also won his heat race for the clean sweep. Glenn Reinstra was the other heat race winner. Fisher was running third and making a pass for second when he tangled with a lapped car shredding his right rear and sending him to the back of the 13 car field. Smith gained a lot of points with his third place finish in the main and may have sealed his second consecutive championship. Reinstra finished second in the main, his best finish in two years with Smith, Paul Burdick and Jarrid Zimmerman third through fifth.

In the Wilson Auto Brokers Outlaw Hornets Mike Hill won his ever heat race and Greg Hibma won his heat as well. The main event saw three different leaders. Wendy Johnson led the first two laps before giving way to Bill Tomer. Tomer would relinquish the lead to Brett Lloyd on the fifth lap and Lloyd would hold on through some serious traffic for his first win of the year.####
