Ellensburg, Washington -- Beautiful weather and lower admission prices brought a good crowd to Yakima Speedway Saturday night. The fans were treated to a big field of eighteen ASA late models, and supporting classes with over 70 cars entering the pit area.
With five classes of cars, with time trials at 5:00 p.m., the track officials did a great job, with the cooperation of the racers, to once again have the entire show over by the 10:30 target time.
Ellensburg’s Travis Bennett paced the field with a fast time of 19.041 sec. around the ½ mile paved oval. Ron Bemis held the lead for the 75 lap main event until lap 36. B.J. Tidrick had applied strong pressure on Bemis until handling woes slowed his efforts. Bennett took over the point to win the event – Tidrick was second with Bemis third. Scott Walker was fourth and points leader Owen Riddle rounded out the top five.
Brian Pepper paced the Super Stock field with a clocking of 21.890. The 2006 Hobby champion, dusty John scored a popular, haerd fought victory in the 30 lap main. Pepper pressured the winner but came up just a couple of feet short, in a finish that had the big crowd on their feet.
Fourteen Hobby cars started their 30 lap main event. Chris Van Amburg set the tone with a 23.505 time trial. In one of the best races all evening, Marcus Maggard held off Ben St Mary to record the win. St. Mary, coming from the back of the field, moved through the competitive field to pressure the leaders. Maggard showed maturity beyond his years to record the win. Points leader, Bryan Moser was third and Todd Connell and Jerry Walker Jr. were in the top five.
Dave Peterson won the Hornet main while points leader Tyson richter captured the Bump to Pass event.
Next event at the speedway is a two day event Labor Day weekend. September 1st. the ARCA Late Model challenge series comes to town along with the super stocks. The ASA Northwest tour cars will practice on Saturday in preparation to their championship event to be held the next day on September 2nd. September 8th. will be the championship events for all the local classes and the last time for all competitors to prepare for the Fall Classic set for September 20-30.
Following post race technical inspection, the late model of Travis Bennett was disqualified for an unapproved part, a rear axle drive plate. B.J. Tidrick was declared the winner on Sunday.![]()
