SUPER LATE MODEL POINTS LEAD CHANGES HANDS AS PRICE WINS ORANGE SHOW SPEEDWAY FEATURESAN BERNARDINO, California -- Charles Price made his first start at Orange Show Speedway since mid-May and won Saturday night’s 50-lap Hype Manufacturing Super Late Model main event.

The big winner was the driver who finished fifth, though. That was Frankie Gould, of Woodland Hills, who went into the 11th of the season’s 14 races two points behind in the standings and came out of it 10 points ahead of former leader Rick Chavez and John Manke, who are tied for second.

Gould had gotten further good news before the race, too, although he didn’t know it at the time. One of the three remaining Super Late Model events, most likely the one scheduled for Oct. 6, has been changed from a points race to an open competition 100-lap main event.

That means Gould only has to protect his lead for two races, instead of three, to claim his first championship at the ASA-sanctioned track.

Chavez, of Murrieta, saw his string of late-season bad luck continue. He had seen his lead trimmed to two points when he finished 10th after an accident Aug. 18. Saturday, he limped home 11th after colliding with Rob Kiemele on lap 21.

Price and Mark Shackleford, the front-row starters, set the pace all the way. Shackleford was in front for 26 laps, then Price took over on lap 27 and easily pulled away while Shackleford was busy holding off Manke, of Ramona, and fast qualifier Glen Cummings, of Highland.

The ASA Pro 4 class drew its largest field of the season, with 17 cars in the pits and 15 starting the main, but the face in Victory Circle was a familiar one as Eddie Secord continued his domination. The Oak Hills resident put his Fiesta Village Pontiac in the lead on the fourth of 30 laps and held off Bryan Glidewell the rest of the way for his ninth win in 11 races.

Art Ramirez, of Walnut, inherited the lead in the Aflac Factory Fours feature when Tony Dumont and Jeff Imbriani got together while fighting for first with four of 30 laps to go and took the win over Spencer Samaro, of San Bernardino.

Ron Davis, of Norwalk, drove his Chevrolet Nova to victory in the 25-lap Stock Cars USA main event, but Riverside’s Mark Whitson finished fourth and clinched the championship with one of the series’ eight races remaining. Whitson has a 52-point lead over Michele Rouse, who did not race Saturday, with a maximum of 50 points available in the Oct. 20 finale.

Reigning Stock Cars USA champion Harry Michaelian Jr. also was a winner, however. He drove his Plymouth to victory in a 12-lap Figure 8 race that served as an impromptu fill-in when the scheduled Demolition Derby was cancelled due to a lack of entries.

Mike O’Hara, of Canyon Country, won the 25-lap feature for Mini StocKars, his fourth win in five races.
