BRENNAN NEWBERRY – YOUNG GUN MAKING HIS MARK IN THE SRL

WILTON, California – When you are in the pit area for an SRL race this season you might notice a younger gentleman who might look like he got a hold of someone’s driving suit. He is so young that many of the SRL drivers are old enough to be his father. But make no mistake; this young gun is 17 year old Brennan Newberry, he drivers the #09 Flashco Chevrolet Monte Carlo and he is beginning to make his mark in the world of stockcar racing as the youngest driver in the SRL!

Newberry had been around racing from his early youth and began to develop a real interest for racing around age 9. Brennan began racing go-karts in the Junior 1 novice division as a member of the Bakersfield Kart Club. His dad, Bob Newberry, was his biggest inspiration as he watched him race his super late model. Bob has been involved in several different types of racing throughout his life. It has been Brennan’s dad that has taught him how to drive and helped him develop his skills as a driver. “The chemistry between my dad and I is unmatched”, said Newberry. Brennan said he also admires Casey Mears and Kevin Harvick due to their Bakersfield roots and their driving abilities. He also keeps and eye on newcomers Regan Smith and Eric Almirola as he eyes what he hopes will be his own path to the big show.

But the young Newberry knows he still has a lot to learn about stockcar racing. Brennan is not only a good student in the high school classroom, he is also a good student in the “SRL classroom” in the pits of the various tracks the touring series takes him to. You will often find him listening intently to the pearls of racing wisdom from many of the more experienced SRL drivers like veterans Dave Byrd and Jim Pettit. One thing that Brennan has learned this year is the importance of getting seat time and finishing the race. This advise has paid dividends not only in getting him experience with more laps but has also paid off with 1 top 5 and 3 top 10 finishes in this his rookie year in the SRL.

When asked about how his year has gone, Newberry emphasized the education he has received. Their team has bonded extremely well. “Every race we learn something new with regards to the track, our car and our competitors in the SRL”, stated Newberry. A major goal for the Newberry team is to finish in the top 10 in SRL points. Brennan explained, “I have to maintain focus and stay on top of my game for the last race at Altamont.”

So when Brennan Newberry is not in the “classroom” of the SRL pit area, he is actually a full time student at Liberty High School as a senior. He enjoys spending time at home with family and friends but typically when he is not in school his is at the race shop working on the 09 car. He does occasionally get away for something “low key” like wake boarding or snow boarding, but mostly he enjoys still being a kid and taking it day by day.

The SRL is one of the premier stock car racing series in the country. The series has patterned itself after NASCAR with beautifully prepared cars and support vehicles, and identifiable team uniforms. This seventh season looks to break all attendance records, attracting over 70 seasoned drivers from all over California and the southwestern states. Local and regional stock car fans can also cheer for new stars that will someday drive the machines of NASCAR. The series is a training ground, not only for drivers but for mechanics, chief mechanics and engineers. This series is great for fans who love live action on a hot weekend.####
