As Martin McKeefery gains experience from each race in his supermodified racecar, he learns the nuances of each racetrack.
On Saturday, McKeefery will take on the central valley’s quarter-mile paved oval at Madera Speedway for the 15th annual Harvest Classic, a 50-lap feature event of exciting, high-horsepowered racing.
“Madera is a bumpy track, thus, it has a lot of character,” McKeefery said. “Meaning you have to actually drive the track and place the car in the fastest groove possible.”
The 20-year-old Milpitas, Calif., resident is leading the 2007 American Speed Association/Western States Supermodified Racing League points series. McKeefery has been consistent in his sophomore season in a supermodified racecar.
McKeefery’s concern is keeping the car intact Saturday, which has been changed from a series points race to a qualifying race for the “North-South Shootout” to be held Nov. 2-3 in North Carolina. The shootout brings the top drivers from across the United States for not only a north-south but east-west challenge.
“This race will definitely change our race game Saturday,” McKeefery said. “Mainly the fact that we’re first in points.
“If they decide Roseburg (Ore.) or another race is for points, then Madera is a big gamble.
“If we end up wrecking the car at Madera - wrecking it bad enough to not make it to a points race - that would be very bad.”
McKeefery is in just his second year in a supermodified, and was the series’ 2006 Rookie of the Year. Not certain of the history of the Harvest Classic, McKeefery said this is just a race for him. Another race to be consistent and do well at, and add to his points lead.
