MADERA, California -- Milpitas resident Martin McKeefery drove a clean and uneventful race Saturday finishing in the fifth position in the 36th annual Harvest Classic race at Madera Speedway.
After two attempts at a side-by-side start of the 50-lap main event, a single-file start was held to get the race under way and in the record books before the track’s curfew.
Starting in the ninth position, McKeefery ran in the middle of the field and methodically worked his way to the fifth spot. The race was slowed by several cautions, however, the pace was quick while under green.
“I had a loose car in the main,” McKeefery said, who began with tight conditions during afternoon practice.“We changed a lot of the setup. But there’s only so much you can do.”
Earlier in the day, as he was pushed out onto the track for qualifying, McKeefery picked up a chunk of asphalt on his right front tire, which then flew into the radiator, piercing a hole into it. After making repairs, McKeefery returned to the track for a hot lap, checking the work. He also finished fifth in his heat race.
“We did change the stagger,” McKeefery said. “We changed the stagger a lot. I was out there racing, but didn’t have the chance to race.”
