TREVOR GLASER: FOR ALL YOU DO, THIS BUD CUP’S FOR YOU…AGAINSOUTHERN OREGON SPEEDWAY
Source: Jay Reese
Glaser, who also won a record 3-straight Willamette Speedway (Lebanon) track championships this summer, drove his way to victory lane for the 12th time this season, and the second time in southern Oregon this year after he won on the 1/3-rd mile oval in May. It was Glaser’s 5th Bud Cup series win of 2007. Driving the masters-bilt #2 Fisher Implement entry, the former down-hill alpine Olympic skier, Glaser, took the lead away from (#3V) Casey Vitale on lap-24 of the 100-lap main event feature, and held off a late race surge by former Bud Cup champion, and mentor (#37) Rob Mayea enroute to the winner’s payday of $1, 750. Mayea, the 2004 Bud Cup champion, hunted Glaser down with 10-laps to go, but had to deal with a lapped car in his way as Glaser skated on to bag the big one away from the defending SOS Bud Cup champion. “I’ve been lucky enough to find something that works, and I’ve been buddied up with Rob Mayea of Bend who has won a ton of races, and thanks to him I’ve only been as good as the guys who have challenged me like Rob, and Bob Boyd, and that’s helped make me better, and it paid off tonight.” Glaser added, “Me and Rob are pretty good buddies on and off the track, and when you put your helmet on you want to beat your buddies probably more than anybody else. I saw the lapped car as we got near the checkered flag, and thought I hope he gets in his way, and not mine, and he did unfortunately for Rob, but lucky for me. With Rob right behind me, and Kurt there, it was like a pack of dogs on my tail” Yreka’s (#01) Kurt Lorenzini Jr., who the race was memorialized in honor of his late father Kurt Lorenzini, led early on starting from the pole, and finished a strong third. “I’ve raced alot with Rob, Trevor, and these guys over the past few years, and we’ve raced hard, but always raced hard and clean just like tonight, and it was fun to run with them. I tried to get the lead back, but couldn’t get it done, but I’m grateful for everybody’s support of my family.” Said Lorenzini. Springfield’s (#17M) Mike Miller started 16th, and zipped his way to a fourth-place finish while Redmond’s Mark Carroll, who started the feature from the 11th position, and was caught up in a tangle with Rob Campos on lap-4, capped his year off with a solid fifth-place showing after notching his first main event win earlier this season in Lebanon. 13 of 19 cars that qualified for the 100-lap enduro finished with all but two on the lead lap. The race was stalled by 8-yellow flag caution banners, and mainly for drivers spinning out. There were only 4 lead changes among 3-drivers, Lorenzini, Vitale, and Glaser. Former late model champion Dane Smith of Medford won the Trophy Dash ahead of Mayea, Lorenzini, Paul Guglamoni, and Jeremy Shank. Smith sailed past Mayea for fourth-place on lap-28, but four laps later had an ignition fail sending the former POSSE champion to the pits for good. “Boy, it felt good tonight, and we were flying enough to pass Rob Mayea there early, and anytime you pass him, you must be going good, but the damn ignition just took a dump.” Offered a somewhat dejected Smith. Brian Norton won the ‘F’ main event ahead of Danny Altom. Dan Kingsberry outdistanced a strong performance from SOS Pro Stock regular Darin Morris to capture the ‘E’ main, while Joey Tanner passed Rick Wyatt to win the ‘D’ main. Second generation racer, Cody Sell held off Craig Hansen to nab the ‘C’ main. And, Hansen inherited the ‘B’ main win after early race leader Gary Smith was sent crashing in to the backstretch chicken wire fence on the last lap.
Dan Menne won the season ending 360 Sprint car race over Marvin Smith, Chadd Noland, and Randy Rodgers who was crowned the track champion.
Rick Rapp claimed the Modified 4-cylinder open main event ahead of Portland’s Bob Wescott. See Also .: News Index | E-mail to a Friend Article posted by RacingWest.com staff on 09/30/2007. http://www.racingwest.com
