MOON SHINES BRIGHTLY! SCHMIDT IS SPEEDWAY CHAMPROSEVILLE, California- Bennie Moon in his Bill McAnally Racing #10 Late Model may have won the Vasko Electric 50 battle Saturday night, September 29th at the All American Speedway, but Eric Schmidt won the war. Although Schmidt settled for second on this final night of the season, with the completion of all fifty laps, Eric and his team won The All American Speedway Late Model Championship for Golden State Racing.

A near capacity crowd was on hand for Fan Appreciation Night as a waning moon shone brightly down on the last divisional race of the season. The Speedway provided several hundred seat cushions to patrons and autograph books for the kids. Fans were delighted to have Dave Kelly and Catfish from 101.9 The Wolf on hand with lots of giveaways. Drivers from all divisions signed autographs for the kids and a night full of short-track action was in store for all in attendance. They would not be disappointed on this night.

In Late Model division, Eric Schmidt (#05) broke his own track record on the first lap of qualifying with a circuit of 13.426/ 89.378mph. Benny Moon was second on the charts with a 13.592/ 88.286mph. Jason Romero (#8) followed with a lap of 13.646/ 87.937mph good enough for third. Gary Glenn’s (#50) lap of 13.697/ 87.610mph earned him fourth and those four drivers clashed in the trophy dash.

In the dash, Bennie Moon crossed first to win the four lap shoot-out. Glenn came home second with Romero third and Schmidt fourth.

In the A Main, The Vasko Electric 50, BMR’s Bobby Grewohl (#16) started from the pole with the invert. Seventeen year old Rio Linda High School student Jonathon Hale (#15) started on the outside of Row One.

The Green Flag was waved by Vasko Electric’s Bill Horvath and the action was on! Grewohl battled Hale early on until Glenn got by Hale for second on Lap four. Moon started fifth and patiently moved up through the top five. A fiery Turn One crash on Lap Nine involving Grewohl and Glenn took out the first and second place drivers. Hale inherited the lead on Lap Nine while Moon moved up to second. Schmidt briefly got to second but was passed by Moon on the very next lap and fell to third. With Hale’s Dodge in clean air it looked as if this might be the night for his first win of the season in his quest for Rookie of the year honors. But there was still much work to be done.

06 Westcar Champ Shannon Mansch (#9) started from the ninth position and made quick work of the field moving in behind Schmidt to fourth by Lap Fourteen. Craig Swim grabbed five positions from twelfth to fifth.

Schmidt was lurking and had the best view of a great battle between Hale and Moon from his spot in third. Hale had a mirror full of Moon for the next thirty-six laps and though he led the most laps he just couldn’t hold off Moon for the most important laps, the last five. Moon got by Hale on Lap Forty-six and held him off to take the checkers for his second victory of the year. Moon won the first Late Model race of the season and he won the last. Schmidt got by Hale to cross second, Hale settled for third, one of his best finishes of the season. Mansch came home fourth with Harold Rieker Jr (#12) fifth.

Rounding out the top ten were:

7th Juan Pitta (#33y)
8th Don Wood (#42)

Andy Field (#8) set a new AAS track record in qualifying with a lap of 13.708/ 87.539mph. Scot Alves (#20) was second on the charts with a turn of 13.833/ 86.748mph. Scott Winters (#24) had the third fastest lap of 13.847/ 86.661mph with Rich Lindgren (#27) fourth at 13.877/ 86.473mph.

In the trophy dash, Lindgren was on the pole with Winters on the outside. Alves and Field were in Row Two. Lap one saw Winters get by Lindgren and it was over. Winters won the trophy, Lindgren was second, Alves was third and Field finished fourth.

With the invert in the A Main, Jim Miller (#28) started from the pole. Miller had Richard Poppert Jr. (#7a) on his outside. Row two saw Lindgren and Mike Regalman (#5a) with Winters (#24) starting sixth at the drop of the green.

Miller was smooth and his car sounded better than ever as he clocked some of his best time early in the race. Lindgren got to second on Lap Two and the battle was on for the next twenty-three laps. Miller’s car was wide and the harder Lindgren pushed to try and get around him the more the tires went away until eventually Winters got him for second at the midway point of the race. Winters looked as if he could make a go of it with Miller until a racing incident with the two on Lap forty took Winters off the pace. He dropped back to seventh and with just ten laps remaining there wasn’t time to make up the ground.

Though some tried, no one could catch Miller in this race as he led all fifty laps on his way to victory. Scot Alves brought home a second place finish. Lindgren crossed third with Field fourth, and Winters limped home fifth.
