BAKERSFIELD, California – On Tuesday, January 15th, the students and advisors who will represent their schools in 2008 Kern Schools Federal Credit Union High School Racing Series at “Kern County’s New Home to NASCAR”, will be awarded their race cars to be raced in 2008.

Twenty General Motors vehicles will be awarded to the twenty area high schools that plan to compete in the upcoming high school racing competition at the new raceway currently under construction west of Bakersfield. The cars will be transformed from their current state of street legal vehicles to full fledge race cars before the start of the race season this summer.

“We started the High School Racing Series in 1997, and today we are still the only racetrack in the country to offer a race series of this type just for high school students.” stated Mesa Marin Raceway founder Marion Collins.

“We’ve had tremendous response so far, with over twenty high schools interested in participating in the program for 2008.” Collins added.

The High School Racing Series received a huge boost as it approaches the 2008 season with the help of Kern Schools Federal Credit Union taking on the role as the program’s title sponsor in 2008.

“We are proud to support this exciting program that has exemplified so many great benefits to high school students in our community.” stated Vince Rojas, President/CEO of Kern Schools Federal Credit Union.

Additional support for the High School Racing Series came by way of local NASCAR star Kevin Harvick, who helped raise over $130,000 for the series during his inaugural charity event that was held in August at the Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace.

“We are happy to support the High School Racing Series, which gives young people in our community the chance to experience our great sport and learn the lessons through racing that will carry with them throughout their lives.” stated Harvick regarding his support of the program.

This Tuesday at 3:30pm, at the showroom of Motor Center Auto Center (3101 Pacheco Road in Bakersfield), representatives from the high school race teams will be on hand to participate in a lottery to choose their race car for this year.

Kern Schools Federal Credit Union High School Racing Series:

Students under the direction of adult advisors build an entry level racecar and raise funds from community sponsorships for their school’s race-team. During the summer months teams compete for the high school racing series annual championship with graduating seniors driving, supported by an all student pit crew. Student teams must comply with the same rules, regulations and code of conduct as professional drivers. A NASCAR membership and insurance is required for all competitors. To be eligible to compete, students must maintain a minimum grade point average and project participation hours are determined####
