11 points paying races and one non-points event make up the slate, with one additional track under discussion. As Westcar prepares for its fourth season, it will look to make history again. In the first season, hispanic Byron Gonzales claimed the championship, and in 2006 Shannon Mansch became the first female to win a Late Model title. 2007 was marked by the dramatic championship for rookie Jarred Beddow of Roseville, who entered the year with less than a dozen bomber starts on his resume. Westcar was also one of the first series to utilize the GM 604 crate engine and the OEM replica front clip. In 2008, history will again be made by Westcar with one of the largest points funds in Late Model racing across North America. Titled MEGABUCK$, the points fund will total $78,500, making it one of the largest Late Model points funds in the entire nation. The points fund may also grow with additional sponsorship. Westcar will offer up a $14,500 points fund for its series championship, with $4000 for first place. Westcar will compete in Altamont’s three Big Dog events and three Tri-Holiday events. Each of these three race series will carry a $6500 points fund. The two Ukiah dates will also carry a $6500 points fund. Westcar drivers will share the track with Altamont drivers in nine of Altamont’s 18 NASCAR features, with all Westcar competitors required to carry a NASCAR license. Altamont’s track championship will also feature a $14,500 points fund. The full 21 race program will also include bonuses for winning multiple championships. Westcar’s season will begin April 5 and 6 with the “Tribute to American Graffiti” at Altamont Motorsports Park. The two-day event is the first of three Big Dog events and will pay $3000 to win. The Big Dog Series is being promoted by Noceti Grupe Inc, and they are online at www.nocetigrupeinc.com Altamont’s Late Models will go dark on April 19 and June 28 as Westcar’s stars head to the fast bullring at Ukiah Speedway. Westcar will share the stage with the SRL Flashco Southwest Tour in Altamont’s Tri-Holiday program, with racing on May 24, July 5, and August 30. Westcar’s championship race will be held in dramatic fashion on September 13 at Altamont, with USAC Sprints and NASCAR Camping World Series West action also taking place. The largest crowd in Westcar history is expected for what should be a stunning conclusion to the 2008 season. The Big Dog Series will wrap up on October 4 and 5, but it will be non-points for the overall Westcar championship. 2008 Westcar schedule: April 5-6 Altamont Motorsports Park Tracy, CA (One feature) April 19 Ukiah Speedway Ukiah, CA May 24 Altamont Motorsports Park Tracy, CA June 7 Altamont Motorsports Park Tracy, CA (Feature each day) June 8 Altamont Motorsports Park Tracy, CA June 28 Ukiah Speedway Ukiah, CA July 5 Altamont Motorsports Park Tracy, CA July 26 Altamont Motorsports Park Tracy, CA August 16 Altamont Motorsports Park Tracy, CA August 30 Altamont Motorsports Park Tracy, CA September 13 Altamont Motorsports Park Tracy, CA October 4-5 Altamont Motorsports Park Tracy, CA (Non-points) Westcar is supported by: Performance Electric, California Door and Frame, Competition Carburetion, John L. About Westcar:
The Westcar Series was started in late 2004 in Northern California by Phil Perry of Perry Race Cars and Jeff Macey of JME, who looked to create a solid touring series for weekly-type Western Late Models.
This series became the Eldorado Westcar Late Model Series, which concluded its third season in 2007. See Also .: News Index | E-mail to a Friend Article posted by RacingWest.com staff on 02/12/2008. http://www.racingwest.com
