Anthony Madrid fought an ill handling car in the final laps of Friday night’s Barnett Dirt Modified feature at Manzanita Speedway but managed to hold off the defending champion Ricky Thornton, Jr. to win his second straight feature, his 112th over all win. Madrid was clearly in command for the first 15 laps but his car "got tight" and Thornton was on his rear bumper for the final five circuits on Manzy’s one third mile track. Chris McCurdy, Jr. finished third and Jay Foster came back from a spin out to finish fourth. Rounding out the top ten were Tony Steele, Mark Harrison, Timmy Ward, John Cornell, Greg Bedia and Randy Harrison.
Foster came out of the third row to take the win in the first eight lap heat race. Jeremy Eatherton finished second with Ryan Henesey and Thornton, Jr. earning spots in the feature. In the second heat it was a runaway win for Rene Madrid who started on the pole. Kenny Wyman finished second, Vince Lucas third and Cornell fourth. Making the feature through the final heat were Anthony Madrid who beat Chris McCurdy, Reeve Staley and Randy Harrison.
The top eight drivers in the ten lap semi filled the 20 car field for the feature. "Cool" Chuck Kuehl withstood a late charge by Jason Noll to take the win with Steele, Bedia, Ward, Jeff Stafford, Don Earven and Mark Harrison also making the transfer.
Garrett Funk, just two days short of his 17th birthday, posted a wire to wire win in only his second start in the SCRA sport modifieds. Verteran driver Kerry Campbell put pressure on the youngster in the closing laps but was two car lengths back at the checkered flag. Ricky Thornton finished third and Chris Rhein, winner of the season opener , was fourth. Rick Stephenson came out of the fifth row to take fifth. Behind him were newcomer Bob Sauqek, Jim Herzner, Jr., Bud Hamblen, Robin Boomgaarden and Jody Henderson.
Shannon Campbell shot away from the field at the drop of the green in the first eight lap heat race. Funk came from last in the eight car field to garner second with Justin Thornton, Ricky Thornton and Stephenson in pursuit.
Herzner had a front row starting berth and used it to good advantage as he was never seriously challenged on his way to a the win in the second heat. Kerry Campbell finished second ahead of Rhein, Boomgaarden and James Webster. Boomgaarden beat Kerry Campbell, Keith Krenklis and Herzner in the Phoenix Tattoo Co. trophy dash.
Clayton Echols took the lead on the third lap and held off Nick Bruce to nail the win in the 15 lap Arizona Modlite Association feature. Robert King, Jr. came back from a mid-race incident that put him at the rear of the field to edge Brandon Echols for fourth. Brad Hallin made a great drive from 14th to take fifth. Then came Dan Kelly, Brian King, Scott Korkosz, Tom Graham and Tom Nichols.
Andy Eatwell was at the wheel of the Mark Pray modlite and easily won the first six lap heat race. He started on the pole and it was no contest as he beat Terry Belcher, Jim Chapp, Clayton Echols and Troy Korkosz. Robert King, Jr. also used a front row berth to beat Scott Korkosz, Bruce, Kelly and Chase Shafer in the second heat.
