Under darkening skies, Garrett Evans of Ardenvoir, Wash., accomplished one of the brightest moments in his career by winning the Albertsons/Osco Drug 125 race at Phoenix International Raceway. Following Evans to the stripe were Greg Pursley, Scott Hansen, Doug McCoun and Kevin Hamlin.
A number of good cars were eliminated early when NASCAR Winston Cup regular, Ken Schrader, drove it hard into the corner losing control of the car in turn two. Collected in that incident were the No. 20 Jim Inglebright, No. 81 Scott Lynch, No. 50 Chris Hart, No. 73 Scott Busby, and No. 59 of Auggie Vidovich, Jr. Schrader blamed the accident to oil or another track condition. The lap-two pile-up led to a red-flag condition and eliminated Vidovich from being a contender, he was pole-sitter and points leader Matt Craftons, only challenger for the championship. Busby was taken to the hospital for evaluation of back pain.
It appeared Crafton had the car to beat when a rear-end let go late in the race and he settled for 24th, but he only needed to finish 31st or better to win the championship and even withoutt the bad luck suffered by the talented Vidovich, Crafton still captured Southwest Championship Crown.![]()
