
BROWNSBURG, Indiana – Penske Racing’s Sam Hornish Jr., pulled double-duty this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and Sprint Cup Series.
On Saturday in the O’Reilly 300, Hornish had to start at the tail end of the field, but by the end of the 200 lap race, Hornish was able to work his way up through the field to record a 19th-place finish.
Sunday afternoon brought the Samsung 500 at the 1.5-mile quad oval and Ryan Newman leading the Penske Racing contingent in his No. 12 Samsung HDTV/Alltel Dodge to the checkered flag. Newman fought a tight race car throughout the day, but was able to hang on for a fourth-place finish.
The next Penske Racing driver in line was Kurt Busch and his No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge in 23rd place, followed by Hornish in 32nd.
The Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series travel to Phoenix International Raceway in Avondale, Ariz., this weekend for their respective races.
The Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series returned to action at the I-55 Raceway in Pevely, Mo., on Saturday night. Shane Stewart led the Ringers’ supporting racers to the finish line in ninth place in his No. 83 Beef Packers/Roth Motorsports entry. Justin Henderson was the next to the line in 13th, with Tony Bruce Jr., following right behind in 14th.
The WoO Sprints travel to Tony Stewart’s famed Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio on Friday and Saturday for two nights of action-packed racing.
Also on Saturday night, the World of Outlaws Dirt Late Model Series was about three hours up the road in action at Farmer City Raceway for a 100-lap feature event.
The top three finishers in the inaugural Illini 100 were all Ringers’ supporting teams.
Arkansas driver Billy Moyer led the field to the checkers for his ninth win of the season (third in WoO Late Models action), with Illinois-native Shannon Babb driving the No. 18 Bowyer Dirt Motorsports entry with 2007 series champion Steve Francis rounding out the podium.
Other Ringers’ notables in the field included Josh Richards, sixth; Rick Eckert, seventh; Chub Frank, 12th; Jeep VanWormer, 13th; Brian Shirley, 19th and Brian Birkhofer, 20th.
The WoO Late Model Series treks to Virginia Motor Speedway in Jamaica, Va., for this weekend’s event.
