“The bonus is great and I thank the many people that have worked so hard to enhance our purse!” said Tony Hunt, five-time USAC driving champion that missed the 2007 USAC event at Roseville due to a scheduling conflict. “You sure won’t want to waste any time getting to the front – which could make the opening laps a bit more exciting.”
The event itself offers a rare opportunity for Sacramento area race fans to see sprint cars in competition. The sprint car - long considered the racer’s race car – is a 750 horsepower open-wheel machine that propelled the careers of A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, and most recently – Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman.
“A sprint car just kicks you back in the seat”, said Hunt. “The horsepower to weight ratio is impressive. With the changes last year to the Roseville track – we really fly there.”
Among those challenging Hunt this Saturday will be a mixture of local talent and visiting out-of-state racers. The potent Western Speed Racing Team is bringing in North Carolina youngster Chase Scott to team with two-time USAC California Ford Focus Champion Tim Skoglund, 20, of Fresno, CA. Scott, 22, has three USAC Carolina Ford Focus titles under his belt. He is the son of AMA Motorcycle hero Hank Scott.
Nick Rescino Jr. of San Francisco will return to the Sacramento area to compete. His father, “Quick Nick” Rescino, won a championship at the now closed West Capital Raceway in West Sacramento in 1979. Another driver that will contend for the win, with deep roots in the Sacramento racing scene, is Greg Anderson. The nephew of former NARC sprint car champions, Billy and Johnny Anderson, Greg holds single lap track record at All-American. Last May – Anderson ripped the track in 12.711 seconds.
Other Northern California entrants expected include Jo Jo Helberg, Shauna Hogg, Laura Hayes, and Brian McClish. Also on the card Saturday evening are the junior Ford Focus Midgets, and Modifieds. Front gates open at 4 pm with racing scheduled for 6 pm.
