Defending series champion, Howard Ford, won the season-opener for the North State Challenge Series presented by Scottfeild Executive Hotels, after starting from the pole position, but it wasn’t as easy as it sounds. Struggling with an ill-handling car, Ford would qualify at 16.302, sixth fast in the short nine-car field. As luck would have it, the inversion draw came up six and Ford had the pole.

Ford’s luck took a turn for the worse when on the first lap, he spun to the infield off the front bumper of 2007 Rookie of the Year, Riley Watson. Watson, Ford, and eventual second place finisher, Dane Nissen, who also spun, went to the back of the pack. CJ Bawden, in his first drive for BAD Racing, assumed the lead, on the restart followed by local champ Steven Gannon and fast-timer Randy Houston.

Gannon and Houston looked like the cars to beat as they got by Bawden and put some distance on the field. Houston made numerous bids to pass on the inside but Gannon was able to hang tough in the upper groove. On lap 40 Brad Wasmund and Andrew Snider made contact and spun in front of the leaders. Gannon contacted Snider and suffered front-end damage, ending his night. Snider was able to continue.

Houston took his turn at the head of the field, chased by Bawden, Watson, Nissen and Ford. Ford moved up to third at the halfway point in the 100-lapper and got by Nissen for second, two laps later and set his sights on Houston. Ten laps later, Ford got by a fading Houston who retired on the next lap with a dead battery.

After Watson blew a right front tire and hit the turn two wall on lap 63, Ford led Nissen and Bawden to the green flag. Nissen, in his first race for Bay Cities Motorsports, stayed on Ford’s bumper over the final 35 laps and looked like he had a shot at the win. Ford was able to hang on to take the checkers and start his season on the right foot.
