HILL CLIMBS TO VICTORY AT MAGIC VALLEY SPEEDWAYTWIN FALLS, Idaho – Round two at Magic Valley Speedway brought both new and familiar faces to Victory Lane last Saturday night. Making their first visit to the winner’s circle were Kris McKean and Shiela Harms, while Tom Hill, Kenny Vanderham and Lane Albright made return trips after capturing wins in their divisions on a very chilly night.

Tom Hill of Eagle was able to outlast a caution-filled Outback Steakhouse 75-lap main event race to capture his first win of the season.

At the half-way point of the race Bobby Latham III of Twin Falls had a considerable lead over the rest of the field as competing Twin Falls residents Steve Jones and John Newhouse along with Craig Bell of Kuna battled for second. With less than 20 laps remaining in the race Newhouse had passed Latham for the lead – but Latham was far from giving anything away. The two contended for the win but soon the tire that had been slowly going down on Latham’s car gave way, sending him into Newhouse at turn four. This put rookie of the year candidate Jones to the lead for the next two restarts, but Hill had the stronger car for the run and he along with Thane Alderman of Las Vegas, Nev., got past Jones on the final laps, giving Jones a third place finish.

“I just lost the car going into the corner and Tom (Hill) got a run on me,” Jones said. Those guys have big motors and when I bobbled just a little bit – I was a sitting duck. But I had a good restart the time before that and I think I would have gotten away from them without that last yellow.”

Defending champion in the series Kenny Vanderham of Jerome drove his way to the winner’s circle by passing Beau Newhouse late in the main-event race. Johnny Pierre held the lead for the first 21 laps, but with a slight nudge Newhouse took over the lead from Pierre on the backstretch. Newhouse was able to fend off Vanderham – who had carefully made his way though the field after starting eleventh - for four laps. However, a caution on lap 28 put Vanderham right on Newhouse’s door for the restart and experience took over as Vanderham was able to take over the lead with six laps remaining.

Kris McKean made his first trip to the winner’s circle after a bold move in the final lap of the main-event race. With rookie in the division John Hoogendoorn in the lead, McKean along with Jerry McKean both made a last ditch attempt to pass the leader on the backstretch. As the No. 3 car of Kris McKean went low, the No. 88 car of Jerry McKean tried the high side around Hoogendoorn. Jerry McKean got the right-side wheels in the dirt but Kris McKean was able to hold on and pull ahead of Hoogendoorn to capture the win.

Starting from the pole Greg Sparks held the lead in the 25-lap main event race until about the half-way point when he lost control of the car on the front stretch. Sparks continued the race after spinning through the infield and rejoining the race from the backstretch, but Shiela Harms had already taken advantage of Sparks’ misfortune. She then continued to hold off a hard charging Jim Shirley for her first win in the division.

Jr. Stingers

Lane Albright won the inaugural event for the division after a battle with the No. 13 car of Steve Edens, Jr. The 10 lap race ran on the one-eighth mile track with four contestants entered in the event.
